SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Dayton baseball team lost a 15-1 decision to Kentucky in the Spartanburg Classic finale.
The Flyers (0-3) were unable to pick up a victory this weekend, after facing a pair of ranked teams in No. 26 Stony Brook and No. 29 Kentucky, and a talented USC-Upstate squad.
SCORING BREAKDOWN- Bottom of the 4th – Kentucky takes a 1-0 lead with an RBI single, scoring the runner from second. Dayton 0, Kentucky 1
- Bottom of the 5th – Kentucky got another RBI single to left, followed by an RBI triple to make it a three-run game. Dayton 0, Kentucky 3
- Bottom of the 7th- The Wildcats had a pair of solo home runs by Javon Shelby and Tristen Pompey, and an RBI single to double their lead once again. The inning wasn't over though as a three-run home run pushed it to 9-0. Dayton 0, Kentucky 9
- Top of the 8th – Glenn Jones hits an RBI single up the middle, scoring Nick Ryan from third. Dayton 1, Kentucky 9
- Bottom of the 8th – UK's had its second straight inning of three or more home runs, hitting four in the 8th and driving in six more. Dayton 1, Kentucky 15
- Top of the 9th – Dayton's Nick Gobert hits his second home run of the season, a solo shot. Dayton 2, Kentucky 15
KEY STATS- Dayton was led offensively by Glenn Jones, who went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Nick Gobert, who homered. Robbie Doring and Matt Poland both added doubles.
- The Flyers were out-hit in the contest, 20-6.
- For the third straight game, Dayton has not committed an error defensively.
- Kentucky hit seven home runs in the game.
- Starting pitcher Zach Beaver (L, 0-1) gave up three runs on 10 hits in his Dayton debut.
- Masashi Sakamoto, Kevin Piersol, Charlie Dant, and Austin Cline all saw time out of the bullpen for the Flyers
- UK's Kyle Cody (W, 1-0) picked up the win, throwing seven shutout innings.
The Flyers return to action next weekend with a three-game series at Furman starting Friday at 4 p.m.
