DAYTON DROPS SERIES OPENER AT FURMAN

GREENVILLE, S.C.  – The University of Dayton baseball team started off the weekend at Furman Friday with an 8-1 loss to the Paladins.

The Flyers (0-4) met host Furman (2-3) for the first time since 2014 at Latham Baseball Stadium.
 

SCORING BREAKDOWN
  • Bottom of 1st – Furman gets a lead-off, solo home run to take the initial lead. An RBI single then doubled the lead in the opening frame. Dayton 0, Furman 2
  • Top of 2nd – Dayton gets on the board in the second with an RBI groundout by Aaron Huesman that plates Robbie Doring. Dayton 1, Furman 2
  • Bottom of 2nd – The Paladins score another on an RBI single to right center. Dayton 1, Furman 3
  • Bottom of 4th – Furman extended its lead with a pair of runs on five hits in the frame. The first Dayton error of the season resulted in another run as the Paladins pushed their advantage to five runs. Dayton 1, Furman 6
  • Bottom of 6th – Dayton found itself in a deeper hole as Furman got a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning. Dayton 1, Furman 7
  • Bottom of the 8th – Furman scored on a double play by the Flyers after having runners on the corners. Dayton 1, Furman 8

KEY STATS
  • Dayton was out-hit in the contest 14-6.
  • After entering the game without a single error this season, the Flyers committed two versus Furman.
  • Robbie Doring led the way for UD with a 2-for-4 outing while Huesman provided the lone RBI. Weybright, Poland, and Gobert also recorded hits for Dayton.
  • Starting pitcher Sam Brunner (L, 0-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings.
  • Austin Cline came in during the fourth inning and pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up just one run on two hits while fanning three. Danny Hentz finished the game with two innings of work and one run allowed on one hit.
