Box Score DAYTON, Ohio - The University of Dayton men's tennis team came out firing on all cylinders against Butler on Friday night, turning in a 5-2 victory from the Five Seasons Sports Park.
Dayton started the match with a sweep of the doubles, grabbing the momentum heading into the singles portion of the contest.
Jordan Benjamin, playing at the top singles spot, cruised to victory, while
Carsten Fisher,
Bernardo Sanson and
Simon Jayaram followed suit.
The win for Dayton was the first since a 4-3 victory over the Bulldogs in the 2012 season.
QUOTEABLESCarsten Fisher"This win felt really good. It was great for us to come out and win the doubles point. That wasn't a part of our game last year and we've worked hard to get in the position now that we can get that point. Going forward it's going to be a huge part of our success."
Jordan Benjamin"It feels really good to continue to get the doubles point. It helps give us great energy as we go to singles and I think today really showed it."
On playing at number one singles... "The styles are a little different. Obviously all the guys are really solid and it's key to try and not give up any points. Saturday I'm playing Kentucky's number one who just beat the reigning national champion. It makes me really focus in on every point of every set."
Coach Ryan Meyer"We've lost to them close in the last couple of years. Today we jumped out with our doubles which has been a focus all year, and then took it to them with our one, two, and three and that was huge. That put them in a position to try and force shots and we were able to play with a bit more freedom."
"This match certainly helps build our momentum for tomorrow. I don't feel like we've had a single match this year where we haven't been in it."
"Kentucky has a great tradition and a great coach and we're going to give them everything we've got. We went down to Louisville and I think showed a lot of people we mean business, and we just want to do the same thing tomorrow at UK."
UP NEXTDayton travels to the Bluegrass state to take on #49 Kentucky at 5 p.m. from the Boone Tennis Complex.
