DAYTON LOSES A-10 OPENER TO SAINT LOUIS, 5-1

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team opened the Atlantic 10 season Friday with 5-1 defeat to Saint Louis University.

The Flyers (5-15) fell into an early hole to the Billikens (10-12) and were unable to come out of it.

SCORING BREAKDOWN
  • Top of 1st – Saint Louis scored on a sacrifice fly in the top of the opening frame. Dayton 0, Saint Louis 1
  • Top of 2nd- The Billikens added to their lead with a run on a fielder's choice and an RBI single to right. Dayton 0, Saint Louis 3
  • Top of 3rd – SLU got another run on a throwing error by the Flyers, pushing the advantage to four runs. An RBI single to right then pushed the lead even further for the visitors. Dayton 0, Saint Louis 5
  • Bottom of 8th – Glenn Jones put Dayton on the board with an RBI single to left, scoring Brad Burkhart from second. Dayton 1, Saint Louis 5

KEY STATS
  • Dayton managed four hits in the game, but gave up nine to Saint Louis. The Flyers were led by Mitch Coughlin, who went 2-for-3 while Jones provided the lone RBI. Nick Ryan also doubled for UD.
  • The Flyers committed two errors in the contest. The Billikens had none.
  • Starter Charlie Dant (L, 1-2) went two innings before giving way to the bullpen. The senior gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits.
  • Reliever Sam Brunner had an excellent outing, throwing seven shutout innings with just three hits allowed and four strikeouts.
