RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team dropped the series opener at VCU on Friday, 9-2.
The Flyers (6-19, 0-4 A-10) are still looking for their first conference win while the Rams (17-9, 4-0 A-10) remain undefeated in league play.
SCORING BREAKDOWN- Bottom of 3rd – Host VCU was the first team to strike with five runs in the third inning. A pair of RBI singles, a fielder's choice, a bases-loaded walk, and an error put the Rams up early on. Dayton 0, VCU 5
- Bottom of 4th – The Rams added to their lead in the fourth with a two-run double to center. Dayton 0, VCU 7
- Bottom of 6th – With a sacrifice fly in the sixth, VCU pulled ahead of Dayton by eight runs. Dayton 0, VCU 8
- Top of 7th – The Flyers were able to get on the board in the seventh with an RBI groundout by Nick Ryan, plating Mitch Coughlin, who singled, moved on a wild pitch, and stole third before scoring. Dayton 1, VCU 8
- Bottom of 7th – VCU got a run back with an RBI bunt single. Dayton 1, VCU 9
- Top of 8th – Aaron Huesman drove in another run for the visiting Flyers with an RBI single up the middle. Dayton 2, VCU 9
KEY STATS- Dayton had five hits in the game compared to VCU's 10 hits.
- Huesman led the Flyers with a 2-for-4 outing and an RBI while Ryan drove in the other UD run.
- The Flyers tied their season high with five defensive miscues.
- UD left nine runners stranded while the Rams left 12 men on base.
- Starter Charlie Dant (L, 1-3) allowed seven runs, only three earned, on seven hits in three innings on the mound.
- Reliever Ben Polansky came on in the fourth and pitched three innings without allowing a hit before Masashi Sakamoto and Jason Johnson closed out the game.
