DAYTON BASEBALL EARNS FIRST A-10 WIN

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team picked up an 8-3 win over VCU in game two of the series Saturday.

The Flyers (7-19, 1-4 A-10) earned its first Atlantic 10 victory over the Rams (17-10, 4-1 A-10), who suffered their first conference loss.

SCORING BREAKDOWN
  • Top of 1st – Mark Gielser doubled down the left-field line, scoring Connor Echols and putting Dayton up first. Dayton 1, VCU 0
  • Bottom of 4th – VCU tied the game up in the fourth with an RBI on fielder's choice play with the bases loaded. An RBI single then put the Rams on top. Dayton 1, VCU 2
  • Top of 6th – Dayton evened the score at 2-2 in the sixth frame with an RBI single by Maverick Prine to left. Mitch Coughlin then put the Flyers back on top with a sacrifice fly to right. Pat Meehan continued the run for UD with an RBI single of his own before Robbie Doring ripped an RBI double to left. Dayton 5, VCU 2
  • Bottom of 6th – The Rams scored again on a sacrifice fly, closing the gap to two runs. Dayton 5, VCU 3
  • Top of 9th – Dayton added to its slim margin with an unearned run on a VCU error with two outs in the ninth. Nick Ryan and Cam Silva then extended the lead even further with back-to-back RBI singles. Dayton 8, VCU 3

KEY STATS
  • The Flyers managed 13 hits in the game, and won despite being out-hit by the Rams (14 hits).
  • Doring led Dayton with a 3-for-5 day, including a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Ryan, Silva, and Prine all had two-hit games and RBI.
  • The seven RBI each came from a different Flyer with eighth UD players recording at least one hit
  • Starter Zach Beaver (W, 2-4) had a strong performance on the mound with three runs allowed on nine hits while striking out two in six innings of work.
  • Reliever Sam Brunner (S, 1) pitched the final three innings of shutout baseball without walking a batter and fanning three.
