DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team came out on top in a 12-inning, 25-run affair on Sunday, 13-12.
The Flyers (12-24, 4-8 A-10) and the Bonnies (16-12-1, 4-5 A-10) combined for 37 hits in the contest.
SCORING BREAKDOWN- Top of 3rd – A wild pitch gave St. Bonaventure the initial lead in the third inning. Dayton 0, SBU 1
- Bottom of 3rd – Dayton answered with an RBI single by Aaron Huesman that was misplayed by the Bonnie leftfielder for another run, giving the Flyers the lead. Dayton 2, SBU 1
- Top of 4th – The Bonnies evened the score and then some in the fourth with six runs courtesy of six hits in the inning. Dayton 2, SBU 5
- Bottom of 4th – Dayton started off the inning with four straight hits including an RBI single to right by Cale Dineen. Robbie Doring was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, plating the fourth run for UD. An RBI single up the middle by Nick Ryan made it a two-run ball game. Dayton 5, SBU 7
- Top of 6th – SBU got a run off a sacrifice fly to left, extending its lead back to three. Dayton 5, SBU 8
- Top of 7th – The Bonnies added to their lead with a two-run home run to left. Dayton 5, SBU 10
- Bottom of 7th – Dayton scored a run in bottom half of the frame with an RBI single to left by Cam Silva. A bases-loaded walk by Matt Poland and an RBI single to center by Mitch Coughlin made it a two-run game. Another walk by Cale Dineen pulled the Flyers within one before a walk by Connor Echols tied it up at 10-10. Nick Ryan then followed suit with a two-run single to left, putting the Flyers on top. Dayton 12, SBU 10
- Top of 8th – SBU got a run back in the next inning with an RBI double to left. A sacrifice fly then tied the game again at 12-12. Dayton 12, SBU 12
- Bottom of 12th – After getting runners on first and second, a sacrifice bunt attempt resulted in a throwing error by the catcher trying to get Huesman at third. Because of the overthrow, Huesman was able to score the game-winning run. Dayton 13, SBU 12
KEY STATS- The Flyers recorded 18 hits in the game, a season high, while the Bonnies totaled 19.
- Dayton benefitted from five SBU errors.
- Nick Ryan led the Flyers with three RBI on a 3-for-5 outing while Nick Weybright went 5-for-6 on the day which ties the A-10 single game high this season.
- Eight different UD players recorded at least one RBI while all nine batters got at least one hit.
- Starter and reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Austin Cline pitched 5 2/3 innings before giving way to the bullpen. He gave up eight runs on 11 hits while striking out two.
- Reliever Ben Polansky threw an inning and a third, allowing two runs on three hits.
- Sam Brunner tossed 3 2/3 innings of shutout baseball to help the Flyers climb back into the game and force extra innings.
- Tyler Henry (W, 3-0) pitched the 12th frame and held the Bonnies in check, earning the win.
