FAIRBORN, Ohio - The University of Dayton volleyball team opened its 2016 campaign with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-10, 27-25) win over Toledo at Wright State's Holiday Inn Invitational Friday evening at WSU's McLin Gymnasium. Dayton starts the year 1-0 while Toledo falls to 0-1.
STATS OF THE MATCH
• Junior Jessica Sloan recorded her first double-double of the season with a team-high 12 kills to go with 10 digs.
• Junior Megan Giardina had a stellar match after setting 28 assists and recording four kills on six attempts for a .667 hitting percentage. She also tallied two blocks on the night.
• As a team, Dayton out-hit Toledo, .309 to.180, and the Flyers recorded 43 kills to the Rockets' 32.
• Toledo was led by Rachel Vidoureck with nine kills, three blocks and an .818 hitting percentage.
SET-BY-SET
• Set One: A bad set by the Rockets capped a 6-1 opening-set run by the Flyers, forcing Toledo into a timeout. It was another five-point lead for Dayton at 11-6 following a kill from Brianna Pittman and the Flyers led by as many as seven, 14-7. Toledo cut the advantage to two, 16-14, and then tied the frame at 18-all. Sophomore Lauren Bruns recorded a kill for set point and a two-touch Toledo set gave Dayton a 25-21 win in the first set.
• Set Two: The second set remained close until the Flyers were able to pull in front by four, 11-7, and UD led TOL by 14, 21-7, after a 13-0 run. Dayton hit a blistering .684 for the set and took a 2-0 lead with a 25-10 set victory.
• Set Three: Toledo went up 3-2 on Dayton and the two squads traded points until the Rockets were able to get in front, 10-7. Toledo was ahead by as many as four, 12-8, but Dayton turned the tables with an 8-2 run to take the 16-14 advantage. On UD's match-point number three, an illegal attack from TOL gave Dayton a 27-25 win to take the match 3-0

UD continues the Holiday Invitational Inn tomorrow morning with an 11 a.m. match against SIUE. Dayton wraps up the weekend against host Wright State in the nightcap at 6:30 p.m. All matches are being played at WSU's McLin Gymnasium.
