FAIRBORN, Ohio - In as many matches, the University of Dayton volleyball team picked up its second win of the weekend - a 3-1 (20-25, 25-14, 25-23, 25-19) win over SIUE - on Saturday afternoon. The Flyers are participating in Wright State's Holiday Inn Invitational at McLin Gymnasium.
STATS OF THE MATCH
• Junior Jessica Sloan led all attackers with a match-high 15 kills to go with eight digs. Sophomore Margo Wolf passed a career-high 25 digs.
• Junior Amber Erhahon tallied 14 kills while hitting at .414 and tallied seven blocks for the match.
• Junior Megan Giardina had an all-around match with 33 assists, eight kills (to zero errors), five blocks and four digs.
• SIUE was led by Ashley Witt with a team-high 11 kills and Katie Shashack with a team-high-tying 14 digs. Also for the Cougars, Dylynn Otte recorded the 10-kill, 14-dig double-double.
SET-BY-SET
• Set One: SIUE started the match on fire, rattling off the first five points of the frame. A 3-0 spurt by the Cougars put them up seven at 10-3 and they led by as many as nine late, 21-12. Dayton was able to cut into the SIUE lead, 21-16, with a 4-0 run and another late Flyer rally set the score at 23-20. The Cougars would hold on to that the first set, 25-20.
• Set Two: An early kill from Giardina gave Dayton a 4-2 advantage over SIUE but the Flyers put together four-straight points to push the lead to 8-3. A 6-1 run resulted in UD's largest lead of the match at 11, 21-10, but SIUE took advantage of back-to-back Dayton errors to get within eight, 21-13. UD scored the last three points of the set to take the frame, 25-14.
• Set Three: Consecutive Flyer kills and a Cougar attack error put Dayton in front by five at 10-5 and the lead was seven, 15-8, after a kill from Erhahon. SIUE evened the set at 18 points apiece in the strength of a 6-1 run, and was able to take the lead at 22-21. It was a battle to the end but Erhahon served up an ace to give Dayton the 25-23 win.
• Set Four: The Flyers came out swinging and found themselves up 7-1 when the Cougars signaled for a break. The score was 11-3 in favor of Dayton when SIUE burned its second timeout of the game and the Flyer lead was 12 at 18-6. The Cougars started to creep back into the set and cut the Flyer advantage to four, 19-15, behind a 9-1 run. Dayton scored the last four points of the match on the strength of three kills from sophomore Kendyll Brown to take the set, 25-19, and the game, 3-1.
