PITTSBURGH – A pair of Duquesne touchdowns within 14 seconds of each other in the third quarter proved to be the backbreaker as the University of Dayton Flyers fell to the Dukes 34-20.  The first touchdown was on an interception to give Duquesne its first lead of the game (21-20).  Dayton fumbled the kickoff and on the very next play Duke QB Dillon Buechel hit Wayne Capers out of the backfield on a 20-yard TD to make it 27-20.

Both teams are 2-1 on the season.

SCORING
• Dayton took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards, with Jack Adams diving in from the one.  Dayton, 7-0
• Duquesne answered with its own touchdown drive of 90 yards in 14 plays.  The drive was given new life when UD blocked a field goal attempt but was flagged for roughing the center.  On the next down, Buechel threw a 13-yard TD pass to Blair Roberts.  The Flyers blocked the PAT.  Dayton 7, Duquesne 6
• UD needed just four plays to find the end zone, thanks to an Alex Jeske 59-yard run that set up Alex Kenner's one yard TD.  Dayton 14, Duquesne 6
• Three field goals started the scoring in the second quarter.
• Duquesne's Austin Crimmins hit a 32-yard field goal to make the score Dayton 14, Duquesne 9.
• A Travis Nees interception set up a William Will 27-yard field goal.  Dayton 17, Duquesne 9
• Back-to-back sacks forced the Dukes to punt out of their end zone, leading to a season-long 45-yard field goal.  Dayton 20, Duquesne 9 with 1:08 left in the half.
• Duquesne took advantage of its best starting field position of the first half to drive 65 yards in just 31 seconds. Freshman running back A.J. Hines scored from 10 yards out.  Dayton 20, Duquesne 15 at halftime.
• With 5:12 left in the third, Carter Henderson returned an interception 23 yards.  Duquesne 21, Dayton 20.
• With 4:58 left in the third, the Buechel-to-Capers connection made it Duquesne 27, Dayton 20 (after another blocked PAT).
• The Dukes put the game away with a 76-yard drive.  Hines gained all 76 yards on the ground, including the last 37 on a breakaway TD with 7:33 left to go in the game.
• Dayton went into the second half with just one healthy running back, and the short-handed Flyer offense was only able to penetrate into Dukes territory once in the second half, a possession that ended with 6:30 remaining.
• Duquesne took over and played keep-away, driving 59 yards to the one, where the Dukes took a knee twice to make the final score Duquesne 34, Dayton 20.

STATS
•  Jeske was Dayton's leading ground gainer, carrying the ball nine times for 45 yards.  True freshman Sean Prophit running back started for the first time.  He had 10 rushes for 42 yards, all in the first half.
• True freshman Ryan Skibinski caught seven passes for 72 yards. 
• Nees had 12 tackles and the interception.  Christopher Beaschler also had 12 hits.  Cameron Stubbs added eight tackles, all unassisted.  Linebacker Jack Crain had two sacks.
• Punter Sean Smith averaged 50.0 yards on six punts, and three of his boots were inside the Duke 20-yard line.
• For Duquesne, Hines gained 189 yards on 29 attempts with two TD's.  Buechel was 18 of 39 passing for 227 yards and two scores.  Linebacker Christian Kuntz was in on nine hits (5 solo) with three sacks, six TFL and a pass batted down.

NOTES
• Will's two field goals gave him 46 on his career, tying Mike Duvic for Dayton career record.
• Skibinski has 15 catches for 166 yards in his first three college games.  The UD freshman record for receptions in a season is 18, set last year by current teammate Tyler Tumpane.
• Duquesne came into the game without allowing a sack.  The Flyers sacked Buechel four times.
• The Dukes lead the series 8-6.  The home team has won the last four contests.

• Dayton opens the Pioneer Football League season at San Diego on Saturday, Sept. 24.  Game time is 7 p.m. ET.
• UD and the Toreros tied for the PFL title last season.
• In this year's preseason poll, USD edged Dayton by one voting point to be the predicted champ, although the Flyers had one more first-place vote than San Diego.
