LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Junior
Taylor Vernot broke the University of Dayton women's cross country 6k record at the 2017 Pre-National Invitational at the E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park. Her time was 20:47.1. She broke the record of current teammate
Emily Leonard, who has held the record since Oct. 20, 2015 with her time of 20:54.6.
Leonard was Dayton's second finisher at the Pre-National Invitational in a time of 20:56.6.
Chloe Flora was UD's third finisher in 21:31.2. Both
Emily Borchers (21:44.2) and
Nicole Steinbicker (21:56.0) ran PR times that are on UD's Top 25 and rounded out Dayton's top five.
They helped UD to 21
st place, the top Atlantic 10 school in the race.
Four Flyers ran in the Black 6K race,
Abbie VanFossen leading the way for Dayton, and finishing in 23:38.52. Freshman
Kelly Wilker was UD's next finisher and had a PR of 23:49.34.
COACH JASON ORDWAY'S QUOTE
We had a really good showing.
Taylor Vernot getting the school record was big for us and it was nice having someone on the lower side of things with
Emily Leonard right behind her.
Chloe Flora struggled a little bit with the weather, but she was able to come through for us and really hunker down. I was really proud of the way she held it all together and finished it out. We decided to hold back
Grace McDonald this week just to give her couple of nagging injuries time to heal before conference. We thought it would be best to hold her out and that gave
Nicole Steinbicker a chance to step up for us. She had a great day, another PR for her, and really solidified that top five for us. All in all, there were some really good performances and some okay performances, but all together we came out in took care of business. Getting 21st in the Pre-National meet is a really big step in the right direction. It shows we are doing things right and have some good talent here. Fitness is rounding into shape and we are looking forward to the postseason. We have a really good 5K and 6K left on the women's side. I'm hoping we can get things rolling and we can get back to action hereÂ
in two weeks.
