#UDBASE COMES UP SHORT IN EXTRA-INNINGS SLUGFEST

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The University of Dayton baseball team fell in an extra-inning heartbreaker to USC Upstate on Saturday night, coming up short 21-20 in 12 innings at Harvey Field.

KEY MOMENTS
- With one out in the bottom of the 12th inning, freshman Drake Harris doubled home the game-winning run for USC Upstate.

SCORING BREAKDOWN
Top 2nd 
- Dayton started the scoring with a sacrifice fly from senior Matt Poland that plated Tate Hagan to put the Flyers up 1-0.

Bottom 2nd
- USC Upstate came right back to take the lead, plating three runs to take a 3-1 lead thanks to a homer and RBI single.

Top 3rd
- UD chipped away at the Spartans' lead, scoring a run thanks to another sacrifice fly, this time by Robbie Doring, scoring Nick Ryan and making the score 3-2.

Bottom 3rd
- The Spartans pushed across a run without the courtesy of a hit in the inning, pushing their lead to 4-2.

Top 4th
- Dayton struck back with a three-run fourth, as Pat Meehan collected an RBI single and Brantley Johnson drove home two with a single of his own, putting the Flyers ahead 5-4.

Bottom 4th
- The lead was short-lived for the Flyers, as the Spartans retook the lead thanks to a two-run homer that put USC Upstate ahead 6-5.

Top 5th
- Dayton opened up the floodgates in the inning, scoring 11 runs on six hits, taking advantage of six free passes, and hitting two home runs to take a 16-6 lead.
- Poland had a huge inning, driving in five runs thanks to a two-run double and a three-run homer.
- Ryan hit a three-run, inside-the-park homer for his second round-tripper of the season.
- Doring and Tate Hagan each added RBI singles in the frame.

Bottom 5th
- USC Upstate scored eight runs on five hits, taking advantage of six free passes, to bring the score to 16-14.

Bottom 6th
- The Spartans took the lead thanks to Charlie Carpenter's second home run of the night, putting Upstate ahead 17-16.

Top 8th
- The Flyers jumped back in front 18-16 thanks to a Connor Echols two-run double that plated Pat Meehan and Nick Ryan.

Bottom 8th
- USC Upstate battled right back with two runs of their own to regain the lead, taking a 19-18 advantage to the ninth.

Top 9th
- With Dayton down to its last strike, Mitch Coughlin worked a two-out walk, stole second base, moved to third on a throwing error, and came home to tie the score at 19-19 thanks to a Meehan single.

Top 12th
- Freshman Takahiro Yamada got his first collegiate hit to lead off the inning, and fellow freshman Connor Wilson replaced him as a runner.
- With one away in the inning, Echols drove a ball into the right-center gap that plated Wilson from first, putting the Flyers ahead 20-19.

Bottom 12th
- Keeping with the theme of the night, USC Upstate rallied in the home half of the frame, scoring two runs to send the Spartans home winners at 21-20.

KEY STATS
- Third baseman Pat Meehan led UD with four hits in the game. The sophomore also scored three runs and drove home two more.
- Senior Nick Ryan and sophomore Connor Echols once again set the table for the Flyer offense, each putting together 3-for-7 performances at the plate. 
- Ryan scored three runs and drove home three as well.
- Echols drove home three and scored one.
- Seniors Robbie Doring and Matt Poland, as well as freshman Tate Hagan, each collected two hits in the game.
- Poland had his best game of the young season, hitting his first home run of the year and a double. The senior catcher drove in six runs for the Flyers.
- Senior Kevin Piersol took the loss in the game, throwing a career-high 4.1 innings and throwing over 100 pitches.
- Dayton's 20 runs scored was the first time the Flyers reached the 20-run plateau in a game since May 15, 2015 when they defeated Fordham 22-10.
