DAYTON –.The University of Dayton split Sunday's double header with Western Illinois, falling in game one 7-5, but securing the series win with a 4-1 win in the nightcap at Spectrum Stadium.
GAME ONE – WESTERN ILLINOIS 7 DAYTON 5
KEY MOMENT
- After tying the game in the top of the ninth inning, Western Illinois saw its first three batters reach. After a fielder's choice brought in the go-ahead run, a throwing error allowed an insurance run to score and give the Leathernecks their first win of the season.
SCORING BREAKDOWN
Bottom 1stÂ
- The Flyers struck first thanks to back-to-back hits from senior
Nick Ryan and sophomore
Connor Echols. After Ryan doubled, Echols blooped a single to left field that allowed the first run to cross and put UD ahead 1-0.
Bottom 4thÂ
- Dayton added two more runs thanks to back-to-back solo homers from redshirt freshman
Brandon Smith and senior
Maverick Prine, giving the Flyers a 3-0 lead.
Bottom 5th
- UD tacked on another on Smith's second home run of the day, another solo shot to left field, making it 4-0 Flyers.
Top 6thÂ
- Western Illinois plated its first runs of the series, plating four thanks to three walks, two hits and a hit by pitch, tying the score at 4-4.
Bottom 8th
- The Flyers jumped back in front thanks to a Leathernecks' error that allowed
Pat Meehan to score from second base on an infield single, bringing the game to its final score of 5-4.
Top 9thÂ
- WIU came through with an RBI double that tied the game 5-5.
Top 10th
- The Leathernecks broke the tie with a pair of runs, one coming home on a bases-loaded groundout and the other scoring on an error.Â
- Western Illinois was able to hold on and take Game One by a final of 7-5.
GAME TWO – DAYTON 4 WESTERN ILLINOIS 1
KEY MOMENT
- With the bases loaded in the top of the ninth inning,
Jason Johnson came out of the bullpen and got the final two outs of the game to secure the 4-1 win and pick up his second career save.
SCORING BREAKDOWN
Bottom 3rdÂ
- Dayton struck first with an unearned run in the third, with
Mitch Coughlin coming in on the back side of a double-steal with
Nick Ryan, putting the Flyers up 1-0.
Bottom 4thÂ
- With the bases loaded, Coughlin reached on an error that allowed two runs to scamper across.
Connor Echols drove home another with a sacrifice fly to put Dayton ahead 4-0.
Top 6th
- The Leathernecks got a run back with a bases loaded walk that made the score 4-1.
