#UDBASE SPLITS DOUBLE HEADER WITH A-10 LEADER VCU

DAYTON – The University of Dayton baseball team split its Saturday double header against Atlantic 10-leading VCU at Spectrum Stadium, winning Game One 4-2 before falling 9-1 in Game two.


GAME ONE – DAYTON 4  VCU 2
KEY MOMENT
- Dayton scored three runs on five hits in the home half of the fifth inning to jump out to a 4-0 lead that would pave the way to a victory in Game One.

SCORING BREAKDOWN
Bottom 3rd 
- Dayton took the early 1-0 lead thanks to a bases-loaded walk drawn by redshirt freshman Brandon Smith.

Bottom 5th 
- The Flyers jumped ahead to a 4-0 advantage thanks to a five-hit frame from UD that plated three runs.
- Freshman Brantley Johnson and Senior Nick Ryan each doubled in the frame.
- Both Smith and freshman Tate Hagan picked up two-out RBI with singles.

Top 6th 
- VCU got on the board with a solo home run to make the score 4-1.

Top 9th 
- The Rams tacked on another run to make the score 4-2 thanks to an RBI groundout, but would get no closer.

GAME TWO – VCU 9  DAYTON 1
KEY MOMENT
- After Dayton had cut its deficit in half, VCU jumped back in front in a big way, scoring three runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 5-1 lead that they would never relinquish. 

SCORING BREAKDOWN
Top 3rd
- VCU grabbed the early advantage thanks to a two-run homer that put the visitors up 2-0.

Bottom 3rd
- Dayton was able to cut the lead in half when freshman Connor Wilson manufactured a run, moving to second on a wild pitch, stealing third, and coming home on a Brantley Johnson sacrifice fly.

Top 5th 
- The Rams bust the game open to 5-1 thanks to a three-run frame, highlighted by a two-run double that capped the scoring for the inning.

Top 9th 
- VCU senior Logan Farrar hit his second home run of the game, this time a solo shot, to put the Rams ahead 6-1.
- The Rams would tally three more runs in the inning to bring the score to its final of 9-1.

KEY STATS
- Senior Kevin Piersol's victory in Game One was the first of the season for the right-hander.
- Junior Peter Rozman picked up his first save of the season with his two-thirds of an inning of relief work.
- The victory was the first for the Flyers at Spectrum Stadium since March 29.
- Redshirt Sophomore Brandon Smith was the only Flyer with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs batted in.
- After registering a double and scoring two runs in Game One, freshman Brantley Johnson's hitting streak was snapped at eight in Game Two.
