#UDBASE RALLIES IN 8TH TO DOWN VCU, 7-6

DAYTON – The University of Dayton baseball team mounted an epic rally in the eighth inning to topple VCU, 7-6, on Sunday afternoon at Spectrum Stadium.

KEY MOMENT
- Trailing 5-3 after VCU plated two runs in the top of the eighth inning, UD struck back with four runs of its own to re-take the lead. The go-ahead run scored on a pinch-hit, Brian Wood single that scored Robbie Doring.

SCORING BREAKDOWN
Top 1st 
- After back-to-back singles started the inning, VCU took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI fielder's choice.

Bottom 1st  
- Dayton manufactured its first run of the game to knot the score at 1-1, with senior Mitch Coughlin coming home on a sacrifice fly by fellow senior Nick Ryan.

Bottom 3rd 
- The Flyers went back in front thanks to Coughlin's hustle on a wild pitch, scoring from third to put UD ahead 2-1.

Bottom 5th 
- Coughlin struck again to put Dayton ahead 3-1, reaching on an error, stealing second, and coming home on a single by Ryan.

Top 6th 
- VCU inched a run closer thanks to a solo home run that made it 3-2.

Top 7th 
- The Rams tied the score 3-3 on their second solo home run of the day.

Top 8th 
- VCU took a 5-3 lead in a wild inning, plating two unearned runs to jump in front.

Bottom 8th 
- Against one of the top relievers in the A-10, Dayton rallied for four runs to take the lead right back.
- Brandon Smith came home to score the first run of the frame for the Flyers after doubling, moving to third on a groundout, and scoring on a wild pitch.
- Connor Echols tied the score with a solo home run over the right field wall.
- Freshman Brian Wood drove home Robbie Doring from second base with a single to score the go-ahead run.
- Coughlin added to his already stellar day with an RBI single that plated pinch-runner Brad Burkhart and put UD ahead 7-5.

Top 9th 
- The Rams didn't go quietly in the final frame, hitting a solo home run to cut the deficit in half, but they would get no closer than 7-6.

KEY STATS
- The Flyers have now won back-to-back Atlantic 10 series for the first time since the 2014 season.
- After getting the save in Saturday's UD win, junior Peter Rozman earned his second win of the campaign with his two innings of one-run work.
- Dayton's offense finished with 11 hits in the game, with Mitch Coughlin, Connor Echols and Bailey Montoya turning in two-hit performances.
- Coughlin accounted for the first three Flyer runs and drove home a fourth to help the Flyers to the victory.
- Echols' home run was his third of the season.
- Nick Ryan drove home two runs in the game.
- Freshman Brian Wood continued to prove his mettle as a pinch-hit aficionado with an RBI single off the bench in the eighth. Of his nine hits on the season, six have been as a pinch hitter.
- The Flyers committed six errors, its most in a victory this season.
- Despite its struggles in the field, UD still made some tremendous plays defensively, including turning three double plays.
