Women's Soccer Home Opener Is This Sunday

Flyers Take on Saint Francis Sunday At Baujan Field At 1 p.m.

• The University of Dayton women's soccer team (0-2-0, 0-0-0 A-10) will play its regular season home opener this Sunday, Aug. 27 at 1 p.m. at Baujan Field against Saint Francis (0-2-0, 0-0-0 NEC). Admission is free and it is a Red Out!
•  The match will be broadcast on Spectrum Sports and A-10 Network (free video stream) with Jeremy Lance and former Flyer Ryan Handbury on the call.
•  Spectrum Sports is a 24/7 sports network found across the state of Ohio on Spectrum channels 1311 HD and 311, whose content is also available on Local on Demand 411. Spectrum Sports is also available in the former Insight areas of central Ohio, on channel 510, and Northern Kentucky, on channels 511 HD and 510.

PROMOTIONS
• T-shirts and mini balls will be thrown out every time the Flyers score.
• Arby's sub giveaway every time UD has a substitution. 
• Posters and schedule cards will be available at the marketing table.
• There will be an autograph session following the match with all the Flyer freshmen. 
• Back by popular demand this season, are the exclusive Dayton Flyers Soccer Scarves. Pick up a punch card at the main entrances. After you get 8 punches you will be able to redeem your card for the scarf at the UD bookstore. They will also be available for purchase ($15) at the bookstore and at selected games.

FLYERS START 2017 SEASON 0-2-0 
• Dayton opened the season with a heartbreaking 3-2 overtime loss at East Carolina. Caroline Mink and Micayla scored goals for UD. Kaelyn Johns recorded eight saves, tying her career high. 
• The Flyers also dropped a 2-0 decision at UNCW. 

THE SERIES
• The Flyers and Red Flash have squared off one time before; Sept. 19, 1993 UD won 11-0 at the Niagara Tournament. 

SCOUTING SAINT FRANCIS
• Saint Francis is also in search of its first win, suffering a 6-0 loss at Miami (Fla.) and a 3-1 setback at Florida Atlantic in the first weekend of action. 
• Senior Gabi Morales scored the lone goal for Saint Francis thus far this season. 
• Saint Francis finished 10-12-0 overall last season. The Red Flash won the Northeast Conference Championship to earn the league's NCAA automatic berth.
• Saint Francis fell 2-0 to Georgetown in the 2016 NCAA First Round.
• 17 letterwinners return this season from that squad. 

FLYER QUICK HITS
• UD had a 9-10-3 overall record in 2016 and was 4-4-2 in the Atlantic 10, earning the No. 7 seed in the tournament. Dayton went on to win the A-10 tournament title.
• Dayton returns nine starters and 71.4 percent of its scoring from a year ago, led by Alexis Kiehl's 21 goals.
• The Flyers have made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances in program history: 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, and 2016. UD advanced to the second round in both 2009 and 2010 and to the Sweet Sixteen in 2001. The Flyers lost 3-2 to No. 24 Ohio State in the NCAA First Round in Columbus last year.

A-10 CHAMPS AGAIN
• The Flyers won the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship in convincing fashion. Dayton outscored opponents 12-0 in three matches. 
Micayla Livingston, Nadia Pestell, Kaelyn Johns, Nicolette Griesinger and Alexis Kiehl were all named to the A-10 All-Championship team. 
Alexis Kiehl broke the tournament record for points (12) and goals scored (5). 
• The defense, which included current players Nicolette Griesinger, Nadia Pestell, Kaelyn Johns (goalkeeper) and Hanna Merritt did not allow a goal in 270 minutes in the A-10 Championship.

MAC HERMANN TROPHY WATCH 
Alexis Kiehl was among the 30 women selected by the United Soccer Coaches (formerly the NSCAA) and the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) to the 2017 MAC Hermann Trophy Watch Lists. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer. 
• She is the only representative from the Atlantic 10 on the list of standout student-athletes. 
• Kiehl, a forward from Cincinnati, Ohio, is coming off a phenomenal season. She led the Flyers with 21 goals and six assists for a total of 48 points. 
• Her 21 goals tied for first in NCAA Division I Women's Soccer in 2016. It's also the fourth-best, single-season effort in UD women's soccer history. 
• She was a 2016 NSCAA NCAA Division I Women's Scholar All-East Region First Team and a 2016 NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region First Team selection.

2017 EXHIBITION RESULTS
• The Flyers defeated Burlington 2-1 with goals from Quincy Kellett and Sidney LeRoy. Burlington is a Canadian club team and includes players who have committed to Ole Miss, Howard, Central Michigan, North Dakota, Vanderbilt, Massachusetts, Dayton, Arkansas, and Fairleigh Dickinson. 
• Dayton fell 4-2 to Miami (Ohio). The RedHawks scored three goals in a span of three minutes to take a 3-0 halftime lead. Alexis Kiehl and Sara Robertson scored second-half goals for the Flyers. 

PICKED TO WIN IT ALL
• For the ninth consecutive year, the University of Dayton women's soccer team has been chosen as the Atlantic 10 Conference preseason favorite in a vote conducted by the league's 14 head coaches. Senior forward Alexis Kiehl was named to the A-10 Preseason team for the third consecutive year and junior defender Nadia Pestell was also selected to the all-conference preseason team.
 • The Flyers earned 179 points and nine first-place votes. Saint Louis was not far behind with 172 points and four first-place votes. 

DAYTON'S A-10 BACKGROUND 
• Dayton has won the A-10 Tournament Championship more than any other team in the conference: 10 times (1996, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2016).  UD has also won or shared 11 Atlantic 10 Regular Season titles (1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2013). The next closest is Massachusetts with five. 
• 2016 marked the 14th time the Flyers advanced to the A-10 Championship final.
• Dayton has appeared in 20 A-10 tournaments, earning a berth every year the Flyers have been a member of the conference. 
• 2016 marked Dayton's fifth title game appearance in the last six years.

KIEHL THE SCORING MACHINE
• Two-time First Team All-Atlantic 10 forward (2015 & 2016) Alexis Kiehl accounted for 21 of UD's 41 goals scored last season. 
She is fourth all-time at UD for goals in a single season, ahead of three-time All-American Colleen Wiliams '12 and UD's all-time leading goal scorer Ashley Campbell '15 who scored 18 in a season.
• She tied for first in the nation in NCAA DI women's soccer for total goals scored and second for total points. 
• Kiehl scored multiple goals in five matches in 2016: 4 vs. Davidson; 2 vs. St. Bonaventure; 3 vs. UMass; 2 vs. George Washington; and 2 vs. Saint Joseph's. 
• She scored a career-high four goals (14th, 30th, 54th, 55th minutes), in Dayton's 5-0 shutout of Davidson Oct. 6, at Alumni Soccer Stadium. She became the first player UD history to score four goals in one match.
• She was named the NSCAA Division I College Player of the Week and TopDrawer Soccer National Player of the Week after leading Dayton to the A-10 title with a conference-record for points (12) and goals (5).  

KO FOR KJ
Kaelyn Johns started every game in goal as a freshman. She finished her rookie year with 79 saves. 
• As a sophomore she had seven shutouts and was a two-time A-10 Defensive Player of the Week. She finished with 84 saves and a 1.07 GAA.

• Dayton hosts Marshall on Friday, Sept. 1 at 8 p.m. ET at Baujan Field. Admission is free. This will be Dayton's camper/club night. There will be free food, posters, prizes and Dayton women's soccer bitmoji trading cards.
