Cook & Yinger Have Big Days, Football Wins At Butler 38-28

Jack Cook Ties UD Record With 5 TD Passes; Tucker Yinger Gains 222 Yards

INDIANAPOLIS -- Jack Cook was 16 of 19 passing for 254 yards and a Dayton-record five touchdowns, and Tucker Yinger ran 28 times for 222 yards to lead the University of Dayton football team Dayton to a 38-28 win at Butler on Saturday.

Stellar performances could be found up and down the Flyer roster.  Ryan Skibinski caught five passes for 135 yards with two touchdowns, and Adam Trautman caught three for 62, with all three of his catches going for touchdowns.  Trautman tied the UD record for TD receptions in a game.  In addition, both eclipsed the century mark for receptions in their careers.  Skibinski now has 102 catches in 30 career games, while Trautman has 101 in 31.

Punter Sean Smith broke the record for the longest punt in Dayton history with an 80-yarder in the third quarter.

David Leisring led the Dayton defense with 12 tackles.

UD improves to 4-5 on the season, and 3-3 in the Pioneer Football League.  Butler falls to 3-5 overall, and 1-4 in the PFL.

FIRST QUARTER
•  After the two teams exchanged punts, Dayton needed just two plays to go 96 yards to open the scoring.  Tucker Yinger broke free for a 71-yard run and then Jack Cook hit Adam Trautman from the 25 to put Dayton up 7-0.
• The Flyers forced a three-and-out, and then when 60 yards in just five plays to go up 14-0.  Cook hit Trautman from 34 yards out.

SECOND QUARTER
• Dayton needed just four snaps to score again, covering 93 yards on the drive.  The bulk came on an 80-yard catch-and-run from Jack Cook to Ryan Skibinski.  Cook looked left and then hit Skibinski in the right flat.  "Ski" got the block he needed out by the numbers from offensive tackle Ben Gauther, stepped out of a would-be tackle and out-ran everyone else for the 80-yard score to put UD up 21-0.
• Butler got on the board with a 10-play-73-yard drive to make the halftime score Dayton 21, Butler7.

THIRD QUARTER
•   The Bulldogs took the second-half kickoff and got back in the game with an impressive 14-play, 75-yard drive.  After a missed PAT, the score was 21-13.
• The Flyers were up against it after the ensuing kickoff was called for a fair catch but bounced before it was caught, essentially downing the ball at the three-yard line.
• After a sack, UD had to punt from its own one-yard line.  Butler had the momentum, had the field position and expected to have the ball near midfield after the upcoming punt.
• Of all the punts Sean Smith has had in his career, very few have been from out of his own end zone.  Smith made the biggest play of the game when he punted from his own end zone and still managed to put the ball inside the Butler 20-yard line with an 80-yard bomb.
• The Dayton D forced a three-and out and it was the Flyers who got the ball near midfield.  Seven plays and 50 yards later, Cook-to-Trautman worked again, this time for a three-yard touchdown, making the score Dayton 28, Butler 13.
 • On the ensuing kickoff, Sam Broom forced a fumble and Ryan Skibinski recovered it to give Dayton a short field.

FOURTH QUARTER
• The turnover at the end of the third led to a Dayton touchdown inside the first minute of the fourth quarter.  Jack Cook's record-tying fifth touchdown pass was a 17-yarder to Ryan Skibinski to give UD a 35-13 lead.
• Butler responded with a 75-yard TD drive, making the score 35-20.
• Up to that point, Dayton's longest series was seven plays and 4:27 time of possession, but when the Flyers needed it most, they were able to nearly double that.  UD kept the ball for 13 plays and seven minutes and nine seconds, and added a 28-yard field goal by Joe Bruni to lead 38-21 with 4:46 remaining.
• The Bulldogs scored quickly, going 77 yards in two minutes to make it 38-28.
• The first expected onside kick was recovered by Butler, but the 'Dogs were offside.  After the penalty, the next one found its way into Dayton hands.
• The Flyers climbed on Tucker Yinger's back to run out the clock.  Yinger gained first downs on tough 12-and-13-yard runs to earn their first road win of the year.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
•    UD has not been shut out in a school-record 474 straight games, the best such active string in all of college football.
•    Jack Cook's five TD passes matched the record of his current quarterback coach, Kevin Hoyng.  Hoyng threw for five scores against Morehead State in 2007.
•    Cook misfired on two passes in Dayton's first possession, completed eight in a row, threw one more incompletion and then found his man on his last seven passes.
•    Tucker Yinger established a new personal high in carries (28).  It was the second time in his Dayton career that he gained more than 200 yards.
•    Yinger now has 3,290 yards in his career, trailing only Connor Kacsor who ran for 3,581.
•    In addition to David Leisring's 12 tackles, Joe Bubonics and Andrew Lutgens each added 10.  Leisring and Bubonics paced the Flyers six solo tackles apiece.  Lutgens led UD with 2.0 TFL.
•    All three Sean Smith's punts were inside the 20-yard line, including his 80-yarder.  He averaged 53.7 yards per punt on the day.  The 80-yard punt happened to be the 80th punt inside the 20 of Smith's career.
•    Four of Smith's seven kickoffs were touchbacks.
•    The trip to Butler is the shortest one of the year for UD.  But the Flyers turned in the longest plays from scrimmage of the season on Saturday -- Yinger's 71-yard run, the Cook-to-Skibinski 80-yard pass, and of course Smith's 80-yard punt.

UP NEXT
•    Dayton is off on Nov. 3, but returns home Nov. 10 when the Flyers play Morehead State on Senior Day.   Game time is 1:00 p.m. ET.
•    At halftime of that game, one member of UD's senior class will be named the 2018 winner of Lt. Andy Zulli Memorial Trophy.  The Zulli award is a character-based award that is regarded among the most prestigious in the program.
•    The Flyers finish the season at Jacksonville on Nov. 17.
