#UDWBB Opens 2018-19 Season Friday With Colgate

It Will Be The Annual School Day Game For Dayton

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball opens the 2018 season Friday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. as the Flyers host Colgate for the annual School Day game.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton is coming off its third Atlantic 10 Championship in the past two seasons and its 11th straight postseason appearance. The Flyers finished the season with a 23-7 record overall and 15-1 A-10 mark. UD had a 16-game winning streak during the season, including conference play, which sealed the regular season title and was enough for an at-large bid in the 2018 NCAA Tournament.

Head coach Shauna Green is the reigning A-10 Coach of the Year and enters her third season at the helm of the Flyers. With a 45-17 record at Dayton and three conference titles, expectations are high for the program, but Coach Green has multiple new faces on this year's roster. Six new players join or are now eligible after sitting out due to transfer rules: redshirt-sophomore Araion Bradshaw (South Carolina), Shakeela Fowler (injury), Julia Chandler (Syracuse), as well as freshmen Kyla Whitehead, Amari Davidson, and Ella Skeens.

As a team last season, the Flyers averaged 73.3 points per game and held opponents to 62.1 points each outing. Overall, Dayton shots 42.7 percent from the field, 38.4 percent from three-point range, and 72.5 percent from the free throw line. Junior Jayla Scaife is the top returning scorer with 14.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game last season while senior Lauren Cannatelli added 13.3 points and set a single season school record with 83 made three-pointers. She is on pace to set the career record at UD as well. Junior Jordan Wilmoth and senior Maddy Dennis started games last season also.

SCOUTING COLGATE
Colgate comes to Dayton with an 0-1 record on the year after losing to Yale on Tuesday. The Raiders were 7-23 last season and 3-15 in conference play.

Head coach Bill Cleary is in his third year with Colgate and has 14 years of head coaching experience.

The Raiders are averaging 61.0 points per game in the early stages of the season and giving up 80.0 points to opponents. Colgate shoots 34.4 percent from the floor, 21.1 percent from three, and 78.9 percent from the free throw line.

Rachel Thompson is coming off an 11-point, 10-rebound, four-steal performance against Yale and leads the way for Colgate. Summer King and Nia Ahart are averaging 10.0 points per game as well.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton earned a 67-56 win over Indianapolis in an exhibition game on Nov. 1 at home. Redshirt junior Julia Chandler led the way with 14 points and went 6-of-8 from the field. Junior Jayla Scaife chipped in 11 points while redshirt sophomore Araion Bradshaw added 10 points in her Dayton debut.

Colgate suffered an 80-61 loss in its season opener at Yale Tuesday. The Raiders failed to score more than 17 points in a single quarter and allowed an early lead for Yale. Rachel Thompson had a team -high 11 points and four steals defensively.

THE SERIES
Dayton and Colgate are meeting for the first time in program history.

THREE POINTS OF EXCELLENCE

Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.

FLYERS IN REGULAR SEASON LEAGUE PLAY
Dayton has won 89 of its last 108 regular season Atlantic 10 games (.832), a streak that dates back to a 97-46 win over Rhode Island on Jan. 7, 2012, and includes a perfect 14-0 mark in conference play during the 2012-13 season.

NEW TO THE STAFF
Head coach Shauna Green announced two new additions to the coaching staff for the 2017-18 season in assistant coach DeAntoine "Cat" Beasley and video coordinator and recruiting assistant Will Alton.

Beasley comes to Dayton after a three-year stint as an assistant for the Gardner-Webb men's basketball team. There he helped guide the Bulldogs to winning seasons each year, including a 19-win season in 2017-18. GWU also had three All-Big South selections and the highest team GPA in nine seasons. Prior to his time at Gardner-Webb, Beasley served as an assistant coach at Pensacola State College in Florida, helping the Pirates finish 21-11 and win their 15th Panhandle Conference title. He also has coaching experience at Chattanooga, Tennessee Tech, and Auburn. Beasley had a seven-year professional career playing in England where he was a perennial All-Star, MVP in the National Trophy race in 2004, and received the 2004 BBC Sports Personality Award for the Southwest Region. After completing his playing career, Beasley began his coaching career at University of St. Mark and St. John, where the team won national titles in 2003 and 2004.

Alton comes to Dayton after serving as an assistant coach at the UMass Lowell. There he helped with video and recruiting as well as on-the-court training. He also has previous experience at Kentucky as the video coordinator, with the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA, and his alma mater, Penn State-Abington. Earning a bachelor of arts degree in corporate communication, Alton graduated from Penn State-Abington in 2012 after being a three-year starter on the men's basketball team.
