#UDBASE Falls In Doubleheader At High Point

The Flyers Dropped Two One-Run Games On Saturday To High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. - The University of Dayton baseball team dropped both games in a doubleheader against High Point on Saturday. The Flyers fell by a score of 8-7 in the first game and then by a 4-3 margin in game two.

Dayton's records now stands at 1-5 overall, while High Point has won four straight and is 4-3 this season.

SCORING BREAKDOWN
Game One: High Point 8, Dayton 7

Dayton raced out to a 4-0 lead by the top of the second, but High Point would battle back with eight unanswered runs to take an 8-4 lead of their own by the end of the sixth inning. The Flyers showed no quit and scored one run apiece in the seventh and eighth innings to bring the score to 8-6 heading into the final frame. Dayton had runners on first and third after back-to-back singles to open the inning from Takahiro Yamada and Connor Echols, but pinch hitter Trey Fulton grounded out into a double play to stall momentum for the Flyers, who dropped the game by a score of 8-7. Freshman Justin Longbrake came up big in shutting down High Point, allowing just one run and striking out three while pitching the final 5.1 innings for Dayton.

Game Two: High Point 4, Dayton 3
Dayton built up a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, but High Point tied it up in the fifth inning, but High Point tied up the game at 3-3 in the fifth. Each of the first four Panther batters reached base in the fifth and with the score sitting at 3-1, Conner Dunbar hit a double with the bases loaded to tie the game. High Point took the lead in the bottom of the eighth after a leadoff double in the inning was followed by a single in the right center gap to score the runner from second. 

KEY STATS
  • Six Dayton hitters, including five of the first six batters in the lineup had two or more hits in the opening game of the doubleheader.
  • Justin Longbrake pitched the final 5.1 innings in the first game of the doubleheader and allowed just one run.
  • Takahiro Yamada went 5-8 (.625) at the plate and tied his career high with three hits in game two.
  • Brantley Johnson had two hits apiece in both games and also added an RBI and a run scored.
  • Peter Rozman started game two for the Flyers and was effective in hitting the strike zone all game. Rozman pitched four innings without yielding a walk to High Point.
  • Brandon Smith came in to relieve Rozman and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing just one run and striking out four.
