Barnes, Rolfe & Whilding To Join UD Athletic Hall Of Fame

Trio Will Be Inducted On Feb. 17 & Introduced At Fordham Game

DAYTON -- The University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame will grow by three on Saturday, Feb. 17 when the 2018 class is introduced at halftime of the Dayton-Fordham men's basketball game.  Saturday's ceremonies will bring the total membership in UD's Hall of Fame to 179.

The new members are Mallory Barnes (track & field), Chris Rolfe (soccer) and Dave Whilding (football).

MALLORY BARNES '11–Track and Field 2007-11

Mallory Barnes is a two-time track and field All-American for the Dayton Flyers.  She finished sixth in the weight throw at both the 2010 and 2011 NCAA Indoor Championship meets.

She also led the Flyers to back-to-back Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field championships in 2010 and 2011 and was a five-time Most Outstanding Field Performer at Atlantic 10 Championships (three indoor, two outdoor).

Barnes is still the UD record holder in the weight throw, and has the second-best all-time mark in hammer throw and is fourth in both shot and discus.  She has the top two weight throws in A-10 history, and three of the top five.

She made a run at a berth on the 2012 Olympic team after graduating in 2011 with a double major in Operations Management and Marketing.

A graduate of Winton Woods High School in Cincinnati, she now lives in Huber Heights, Ohio.

CHRIS ROLFE '17– Soccer 2002-05

Chris Rolfe is the most decorated men's soccer player in the University of Dayton history.  Despite having a series of injuries throughout his career, Rolfe put his name all over the Flyer record book, earned multiple Atlantic 10 honors, moved on to the MSL and the Danish Superliga, and played for the U.S. National Team.

Even though he missed good portions of two seasons during his college career, Rolfe remains the UD career record holder in assists (25), is third in career points (87) and sixth in career goals (31).  His 10 assists in 2004 are the UD single-season record.

Rolfe was named to Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team as a freshman, and First Team All-Atlantic 10 as a sophomore and senior.  He was also three-time OSCAA First Team All-Ohio (second team as a freshman) and NSCAA First All-Great Lake Region as a sophomore and senior.

The Kettering, Ohio native was named Second Team NSCAA All-American as a senior.  He led Dayton to a 43-29-6 record over his career, including 27-15-2 in A-10. Rolfe also played for Chicago Fire Premier in the USL Premier Development League during the summers of 2003 and 2004, helping the Fire PDL team to the national championship game in 2003 and an undefeated season in 2004.

After his college career ended, Rolfe was drafted by the Chicago Fire in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft.  After four seasons in Chicago, he signed with Aalborg in the Danish Superliga.  He played two years in Europe before returning to the Fire.

Following his return to the MLS, he was named Chicago's Most Valuable Player in 2012.  He was traded to DC United in 2014 and that side's MVP in 2015.  He also had 10 caps with U.S. National Team, helping them qualify for the 2010 World Cup

Rolfe retired from professional soccer last year.  He also completed requirements for his degree in finance from the University of Dayton last fall.  The Fairmont High School graduate currently lives in Denver.

DAVE WHILDING – Football Coach 1977-2011

Dave Whilding spent 35 seasons on the sidelines as a University of Dayton assistant football coach from 1977 to 2011.  He was part of history as the Dayton offense was never shut out during his time at UD, and now he makes history as the first assistant coach to be inducted into the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame.

Whilding spent the final 31 years of his tenure coaching UD's quarterbacks and the last 29 serving as offensive coordinator.  He inherited a school-record games-without-being shutout streak that began in 1976, and extended it to 397 games when he retired.  It is now up to 465 games, the longest active streak in college football and the longest-ever involving a Division I team.

Whilding was an integral part of four national championship teams at Dayton (1980 and 1989 NCAA Division III and 2002 and 2007 I-AA Mid-Major) and 11 Pioneer Football League champions.

Of the 17 new starting quarterbacks in Whilding's 31 years of coaching the position, 11 took over with less than 20 career passes to their credit.  Yet the Flyer offense kept clicking.

At present, three of his quarterbacks – Kevin Johns, Steve Keller and Dan Sharley -- have been inducted into the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame.  More are sure to follow.  During a five-year period in the 1990's, three Flyer QB's led their respective NCAA Divisions in passing efficiency.  In career total offense, seven of the top ten players in UD history are Whilding quarterbacks.

Whilding and his wife Evie live in Jamestown.  A native of Xenia, Whilding earned his bachelor's degree from Earlham College in 1971.  He played quarterback there for Rick Carter, the coach who brought him to UD in 1977.
