DAYTON – The Pioneer Football League announced its first weekly awards of the season and recognized University of Dayton junior Javawn Brooks as the Defensive Player of the Week.

Brooks earned his starting spot in the secondary in training camp and stamped it with a two-interception game to start the season as the Flyers defeated Fairmont State at home, 43-10. The junior safety picked off an experienced FSU quarterback midway through the second quarter and returned it 35 yards, all the way down to the five, setting up an easy Dayton touchdown. On the following drive, Brooks intercepted a pass again and returned it another 28 yards, setting up another Flyer score. Brooks finished with two tackles to go along with his two interceptions.  

This is the first honor for Brooks this season and first for the Flyers. He has appeared in 11 career games for Dayton and added a career-high in tackles Saturday as well.

Dayton won the season opener thanks to consistent play on both sides of the ball. Brooks and the rest of the Flyers enter a bye week before returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 12 vs Thomas More at home.
