DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team dropped the second game of its three-game weekend series with St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon by a score of 2-0. Dayton's record is now 9-25 overall and 3-8 in the Atlantic 10, while St. Bonaventure is now 8-21 and jumps back ahead of the Flyers in the A-10 standings with a 4-8 conference mark.
KEY MOMENT
Trailing 2-0 heading in bottom of the ninth,
Brian Wood started Dayton's last chance to take game two strong with a single through the right side of the infield.
Connor Echols popped out to the shortstop, but
Michael Cleary drew a walk with one out to put the game-tying run on the base paths.
Bailey Montoya followed Cleary's walk with a game-ending 6-4-3 double play ending Dayton's rally attempt.
SCORING SUMMARY
Top 3rd: (St. Bonaventure 1, Dayton 0)
Sam Fuller opened the inning with a double down the left field line and advanced to third on a groundball. He would go on to score on a wild pitch with two outs for the first run of the game.
Top 4th: (St. Bonaventure 2, Dayton 0)
David Vaccaro hit a double to get into scoring position and was driven home two batters later by Sam Fuller, who hit a single through the right side of the infield.
KEY STATS
- Junior Austin Cline struck out 11 batters in seven innings on the mound, setting a new season-high mark for strikeouts in a game by a Dayton pitcher. The previous top mark was 10 strikeouts from Tyler Jones, which was set just one day ago in the Flyers' series-opening win over St. Bonaventure on Friday.
- Peter Rozman inherited the bases loaded with just one out in the top of the ninth, but Rozman kept Dayton in the game with two clutch strikeouts to end the inning and bring the Flyers back up to the plate.
- Pat Meehan stole two bases in the game to bring his season total up to 10. The only other Flyer in double figures for stolen bases is Mitchell Garrity, who has 12.
- Masashi Sakamoto also threw a scoreless inning on the mound, while allowing just one hit.
