Dayton Clinches Series With 12-0 Win Over St. Bonaventure

Sunday Was Dayton Baseball Vs. Cancer Day And The Flyers Finished The Day Having Raised Over $4,300 Towards Pediatric Brain Tumor Research

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton baseball team secured a series-clinching win over St. Bonaventure on Sunday with a 12-0 victory over the visiting Bonnies at Woerner Field. The Flyers improve to 10-25 (4-8 A-10), while St. Bonaventure's record now stands at 8-22 (4-9 A-10).

The win gave Dayton their first series win of the season and gives them momentum heading into a showdown with the University of Richmond next weekend. Dayton is two games behind Richmond for the No. 7 spot in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings, which is the cutoff point for qualification in the A-10 Tournament in late May.

Sunday was also Dayton Baseball Vs. Cancer Day, as the Flyers teamed up with the Vs. Cancer Foundation to raise money for pediatric brain tumor research. Dayton raised over $4,300 for the foundation and several of the team's players shaved their heads after the game in support of children battling cancer.

KEY MOMENT
The game was scoreless through four and a half innings of play, but after Connor Echols opened the bottom of the fifth with a bunt single to reach base, Tate Hagan stepped up to the plate and crushed a two-run blast over the right field to break the 0-0 tie. Hagan's home run would prove to spark the Dayton offense, as the Flyers would go on to score a total of seven runs in the inning, the most in a single inning by the team all season.

SCORING SUMMARY
Bottom 5th: (Dayton 7, St. Bonaventure 0)
Tate Hagan kicked off the scoring with his second home run of the season, scoring Connor Echols from first and igniting life into the Dayton lineup. After a Bailey Montoya walk, Mitchell Garrity doubled to left center to start a streak of six consecutive two-out hits to give the Flyers a pair of runners in scoring position, and Michael Cleary drove both home with a two-run single into right field. Pat Meehan continued the hit streak with a single and Brandon Smith followed Meehan with a double down the left field line to score Cleary. The Flyers batted around the order and Connor Echols picked up his second hit of the inning and plated both Meehan and Smith with a single through the left side.

Bottom 7th: (Dayton 8, St. Bonaventure 0)
Brandon Smith got aboard with a single through the left side, then advanced to third went St. Bonaventure's catcher made an errant throw down to second base on a Smith steal attempt. Connor Echols singled up the middle to drive Smith home.

Bottom 8th: (Dayton 12, St. Bonaventure 0)
Bailey Montoya led off the inning with a single and Dayton drew three straight walks, including one with the bases loaded with Michael Cleary at the plate, to drive in a run. With the bases still juiced, Brandon Smith grounded out and scored Brantley Johnson from third. Connor Echols and Nick Spiliotis both got RBI singles before the end of the inning to cap off the scoring.
