#UDMTEN Falls In Atlantic 10 Finals To VCU, 4-1

Zach Berry and Carsten Fisher Broke The Dayton Record For Doubles Wins In A Single Season

Box Score ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Dayton men's tennis team fell in the Atlantic 10 Championship Finals on Sunday morning with a 4-1 loss to VCU, who won their second consecutive A-10 title. Dayton finishes the season with an 18-7 overall record, which ranks second all-time for wins in a single season in Dayton history. Sunday was Dayton's second trip to the Atlantic 10 Championship Finals and its first since 2005.

Dayton and VCU split the first two doubles matches, with the Rams taking court three, but Carsten Fisher and Zach Berry winning No. 1 doubles for their 24th doubles win this season, which set a new single-season record, besting Tom Murphy and Rex Cabrera's previous record of 23 wins. Jordan Benjamin and Theo Jener trailed 5-2 in No. 2 doubles, but strung together two straight points to cut VCU's lead in the set to just one, however the duo couldn't complete the rally, as the Rams clinched the doubles point, 6-4.

Carsten Fisher and Jordan Benjamin both took the first sets of their matches on courts one and two, respectively, but the Dayton dropped the opening set in the other four matches, meaning the Flyers needed to flip at least two of those courts in three sets. Fisher evened up the match score at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 win, but Dayton was unable to grab any additional momentum from the senior's win at No. 2 singles. VCU earned a pair of straight set wins at No. 6 and No. 5 doubles, then received the clinching point from Javier Amantegui on court four, who defeated Theo Jener by a 6-2, 6-3 margin to lock up the championship for the Rams.

Zach Berry, Carsten Fisher and Simon Jayaram finish their careers as Dayton's all-time winningest class with 60 team wins to their name over their four years as Flyers. Aside from the single-season doubles wins record they set today, Berry and Fisher also rank tied-for-third for career doubles wins (71) and are both in the top five all-time for career singles wins. Fisher ranks third in Flyer history with 78, while Berry fills in right behind him with 77 wins. Jayaram racked up 48 career wins in singles play over his four-year career, including a career-best 17 wins in 2017, and posted a 20-9 career mark in singles when playing at the No. 4 spot or higher in the lineup.
