VCU Tops #UDBASE In Doubleheader Action On Friday

Series Will Conclude On Sunday With First Pitch Scheduled For 1 PM

Richmond, Va. – The University of Dayton dropped both games of its doubleheader against VCU on Friday by scores of 9-4 and 10-1, respectively. Dayton will have a record of 7-18 (1-4 A-10) heading into Sunday's series finale against VCU, while the Rams record now stands at 21-10 (6-2 A-10).

KEY MOMENT – GAME ONE
Dayton trailed by a score of 6-1 heading into the top of the eighth, but mounted a furious rally in a valiant comeback effort. Bailey Montoya started the rally with a double into left field and would score two batters later when Mitchell Garrity drove him home with a single into center field. Garrity reached third following a Yamada hit by pitch and a Meehan fielder's choice. Garrity scored and Meehan advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Tate Hagan drove home Meehan with a single to right field to bring the Flyers' deficit down to just two. Connor Echols followed Hagan with another base hit to give Dayton the tying run on first base. Pinch hitter Brian Wood followed Echols with a strike out to end the inning, however, and the Flyers gave up three runs in the bottom half of the frame to make the score 9-4.

KEY MOMENT – GAME TWO
Free passes allowed to VCU hitters hurt the Flyers on the mound, with the pitching staff combining for six walks and four hit batsmen, while Dayton's numbers at the plate with runners on base and in scoring position also proved to be costly in game two of the doubleheader. Dayton was 0-for-10 with runners on base until Mitchell Garrity finally hit a single into right field with Brantley Johnson on first base. The Flyers finished 0-for-7 at the plate with runners in scoring position.

SCORING SUMMARY – GAME ONE
Bottom 2nd - (VCU 1, Dayton 0)
VCU got a leadoff double in the inning from Hogan Brown, who advanced to third on a Brett Willett groundout. Brown scored on a two-out single up the middle from Josh Simon.
Top 4th – (Dayton 1, VCU 1)
With one out already in the inning, Pat Meehan roped a double down the left field line and followed up by stealing third.  Like VCU's run scored two innings prior, a two-out single up the middle is how Dayton generated its first run of the day. Connor Echols is the one who delivered the game-tying hit.
Bottom 5th – (VCU 3, Dayton 1)
VCU had runners on second and third with two outs and Mitchel Lacey hit a double just over the outstretched glove of Tate Hagan at first base to drive home two runs.
Bottom 7th – (VCU 6, Dayton 1)
Tyler Jones set down the first two Rams batters of the inning and appeared on his way to a second consecutive 1-2-3 inning on the mound, but a throwing error from Takahiro Yamada at third base extended the inning and VCU made Dayton pay, beginning with an RBI triple off the wall in right-center field from Daane Berezo. Mitchel Lacey and Paul Witt also drove home one apiece with singles to bring the Ram lead to 6-1.
Top 8th – (VCU 6, Dayton 4)
Bailey Montoya led off the inning with a double that bounced off the left field wall and scored two batters later when Mitchell Garrity drove him home with a single into right-center. Garrity advanced to third following a Takahiro Yamada hit by pitch and Pat Meehan fielder's choice before scoring on a wild pitch. Meehan moved up all the way to third on the wild pitch and then scored when Tate Hagan drove a single into right field.
 Bottom 8th – (VCU 9, Dayton 4)
Three consecutive singles to open up the inning gave VCU a run and runners on the corners with no outs. A fourth single in the inning, this time on a bunt, brought in another run in the eighth and the Rams plated one more on a sacrifice fly for the final run of the game.

SCORING SUMMARY – GAME TWO
Bottom 2nd – (VCU 1, Dayton 0)
Steven Carpenter hit a ball down to right field line that dropped just beyond the diving efforts of Michael Cleary that drove in Liam Hibbits from first.
Bottom 4th – (VCU 2, Dayton 0)
Brett Willett hit a single into right field to score Paul Witt from third and double the VCU lead.
Bottom 5th: (VCU 5, Dayton 0)
Two of the first three VCU batters in the inning reached base to give the Rams runners on second and third with just one out and both runners would score on a double down the right field line by Paul Witt. Hogan Brown hit a single into center field to drive home Witt.
Bottom 7th: (VCU 10, Dayton 0)
Two hits, two walks, a fielding error and a wild pitch, along with a hit batsman with the bases loaded led to five VCU runs, as the Rams extended their lead to double digits.
Top 8th: (VCU 10, Dayton 1)
Brantley Johnson scored Dayton's first run of the game off a wild pitch. Johnson reached on a walk and then advanced to third on a Mitchell Garrity single and a Pat Meehan fly out, which he tagged up from second on.
