Aaron Ernst Shuts Down VCU, As #UDBASE Wins Series Finale

Ernst Threw A Complete Game And Allowed Just One Run Off Five Hits In His Nine Innings Of Work

Richmond, Va. – The University of Dayton baseball team ended its weekend with an impressive 6-1 win over VCU on Sunday. Aaron Ernst threw a complete game to stifle the VCU offense and allowed just one run and five hits across his nine innings of work on the mound.

KEY MOMENT
Dayton's offense set the tone for the game in the first inning. Mitchell Garrity and Takahiro Yamada opened the game with back-to-back singles and both moved up on a Pat Meehan sacrifice bunt. Garrity scored on a wild pitch and Brandon Smith plated Yamada with an RBI single to right field to give Dayton a two-run lead before the Rams had even got a chance to hit.

SCORING SUMMARY

Mitchell Garrity and Takahiro Yamada each reached base on singles to open up the game for Dayton and were immediately moved up on a sac bunt from Pat Meehan. Garrity would go on to score off a wild pitch, while Yamada was driven home by Brandon Smith, who hit an RBI single into left field.

Bottom 3rd: (Dayton 2, VCU 1)
VCU hit a double, a sac bunt and a single to get on the board for the first time of the game.

Top 5th (Dayton 4, VCU 1)

Cleary used heads up base running to steal home and score when the VCU pitcher attempted to pick off Johnson at first and Johnson went on to score off a Takahiro Yamada triple.

Top 6th: (Dayton 5, VCU 1)
Brandon Smith hit a towering solo home run the hit just to the right of the video board. It was Smith's third home run of the season.

Top 7th: (Dayton 6, VCU 1)
Mitchell Garrity's third hit of the day was a rocket down the right field line that resulted in a stand-up triple. He was driven home by Pat Meehan, who hit a two-out double over the head of the VCU left fielder.
