The University of Dayton men's tennis team will open its 2019 season on Monday with a match against the University of Toledo. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m. (ET).
Senior
Jordan Benjamin returns for the Flyers in 2019 after becoming the first-ever UD tennis player to qualify for the NCAA Tournament last season. Benjamin was a perfect 16-0 at the No. 1 spot in the lineup last season and earned an at-large bid to the tournament by being the top-ranked player in the ITA's National Top 125 rankings. Benjamin was ranked as high as No. 77 during the fall season and looks to lead the Flyers to their first Atlantic 10 Championship in the spring.
Lorenzo Rollhauser is the other returning senior for Dayton this season after posting a 10-4 overall record, including a 5-3 mark in dual match play, despite being forced to miss some time with injury a season ago.
Junior
Steven Karl and sophomore
Will Harper represent other key returners for the Flyers this season with experience in the dual lineup. Karl posted an 8-4 record at the No. 5 spot in the lineup en route to compiling a 12-7 record in dual match play, while Harper saw significant time in the lineup during the final stretch of the season last year despite only being a freshman and posted a 6-2 record in those matches.
A pair of transfers from the University of Alabama, redshirt senior
Langford Hills and junior
Spencer Richey, will bolster the Flyers lineup. Richey climbed all the No. 10 ITA National Doubles ranking in May 2017 with then-teammate Mazen Osama before transferring to Dayton this past summer and Hills compiled an overall singles match record of 18-19 while competing for the Crimson Tide.
This is the second straight season that Dayton will open its spring season against Toledo. In last year's match against the Rockets on Jan. 20, the Flyers came away with a 6-1 win at the Five Seasons Sports Complex.
The program is led by head coach
Ryan Meyer, who led the team to an 18-7 record last season and Dayton's second-ever trip to the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament Finals. The Flyers will look to build off the momentum from last season, as the team's 18 wins were the second most in program history and it was UD's first trip to the conference's championship match since 2005.
