Box Score Kalamazoo, Mich. -- The University of Dayton men's tennis team picked up an impressive win over the MAC leaders Western Michigan on Sunday, avenging a loss to the Broncos from the 2018 season. The Flyers are now 14-5 on the season and have won four straight, while the Broncos now own a 13-8 record in the spring.
Dayton found itself in an early hole after suffering a pair of losses in doubles at No. 1 and No. 3, then at No. 5 singles to give Western Michigan a 2-0 advantage to open the match, but the Flyers showed resiliency in singles play to mount a comeback by rattling off four straight wins in singles.
Joe DeMarco kicked off the turnaround with a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles, while
Parker Banning tied up the match at 2-2 with a three-set win at No. 6. Banning fell behind with a 6-1 loss in the opening set, but battled back to win the next two sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-3 to take the match.
Steven Karl won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (6), to put Dayton in the driver's seat, then
Jordan Benjamin slammed the door with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win at the top spot in the lineup to clinch the match for the Flyers.
A pair of matches against A-10 Conference foes awaits Dayton next weekend, as the Flyers will head to the D.C. area to take on George Mason on Apr. 6, then George Washington on Apr. 7 with both matches scheduled for a 10 a.m. (ET) start.
