DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team heads back on the road to battle nationally ranked West Virginia, who is No. 20 in the nation. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Dick Dlesk Stadium in Morgantown, W. Va.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
The Flyers are coming off a huge 5-0 win over Detroit Mercy Tuesday and are now 2-4 on the season. Both wins for UD have come at home.
Head coach
Dennis Currier is in his 15th season at the helm of the Flyers, totaling 141 victories, the most in UD history. He leads a veteran squad this season with seven seniors and 10 returning starters.
Overall, Dayton is scoring 1.83 goals per game and holding opponents to 1.67 goals per contest. The Flyers are being out-shot 12.8 to 15.0 shots per game, but is shooting a higher percentage. Dayton ranks in the Top 30 in the nation in total goals and total assists.
The Flyers are led by junior
Jonas Fjeldberg, who has team-highs of four goals and eight points. Freshman
Toluwalase Oladeinbo has added three goals while three players have two assists each. Senior goalkeeper
Federico Barrios has 23 saves and a 1.61 goals against average.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
WEST VIRGINIA
West Virginia hosts the Flyers on Saturday after being unbeaten at home this season and 4-1-1 on the year. The 20th-ranked Mountaineers have not lost since at Delaware on Sept. 2 and has a win over No. 15 Coastal Carolina and a draw against No. 12 Charlotte.
As a team, WVU is scoring 1.67 goals each game, but only allowing 0.83 goals to opposing squads. The Mountaineers are out-shooting opponents by a prolific amount, 16.0 to 7.8. WVU ranks 13th in the country in total assists and 18th in shots per game.
WVU is led by Andre Muriel Albino and his three goals and one assist on the season. Rodrigo Robles Grajera has added two goals and an assist as well. Goalkeeper Steven Tekesky has two shutouts and a 0.80 goals against average in six starts.
THE SERIES
Dayton and West Virginia have met just twice previously with the Mountaineers winning both contests. In the last meeting in 2018, WVU came out on top in Dayton, 2-0.
LAST OUTING
Dayton is coming off its biggest win of the season, powering its way to a 5-0 victory over Detroit Mercy at home Tuesday. A brace by
Toluwalase Oladeinbo led the way for UD.
West Virginia earned its second straight win on the road at Cincinnati Tuesday, 2-1 in overtime. The Mountaineers got the game-winner from Kevin Morris in the 96th minute.
BARRIOS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE
Senior goalkeeper
Federico Barrios was named to the Atlantic 10 Preseason All-Conference team as the lone keeper. The Colombia native led the league in save percentage last season with a .815 mark and totaled a conference-high eight shutouts to go with 53 saves.
BARRIOS NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Dayton goalkeeper
Federico Barrios was named All-Tournament team at the Wolstein Classic on Sept. 1 after his performance in the two game stretch. He recorded a career-high nine saves in the contest against CSUN Sunday.
PRESEASON
The Flyers went undefeated in the two exhibition games this year, finishing with a 2-0 win over IUPUI and a 0-0 draw against Bowling Green. Both shutouts took place at home with the Flyers defending Baujan Field.
DAYTON PICKED TO FINISH 4TH
The Atlantic 10 Conference released its preseason poll and picked the Flyers to finish fourth with 121 points. Dayton was predicted to finish behind favorites VCU (159), Saint Louis (146), and Rhode Island (142).
FLYER SUCCESS
The Dayton men's program has an overall record of 499-424-90 and four NCAA Tournament appearances in its history. The Flyers are also 134-89-26 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and have six conference titles between the regular season and league tournament.
UP NEXT
Dayton returns home for a home contest against Northern Kentucky, Tuesday, Sept. 24 in non-conference action. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Baujan Field.
HIGH FIVE
The Flyers scored five goals in their win over Detroit Mercy on Sept. 17 at home. It was the most goals in a game for Dayton since Nov. 1 2017 against George Mason in the season finale at Baujan Field.
