WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of Dayton baseball team concluded a 3-1 weekend in Wilmington, N.C. after taking down host UNCW 9-2 on Sunday.
Dayton fell to the Seahawks on Friday night but took the rematch in a convincing fashion, capitalizing on nine walks by the UNCW pitching staff.
Coach's Corner
On Sunday's game
"
Dylan Keller did a nice job of keeping those guys off balance and taking us deep into the game," head coach
Jayson King said. "I thought it was much needed at the end of a four game series. I really liked how the offense strung together a bunch of good at bats over the course of the game and got some timely hits."
On the weekend
"During the first weekend it's nice to run your guys out there against good teams to see what your good at and what you need to get better at," King said. "It allowed us to gauge those things and now we can make adjustments moving forward. Overall I was happy with the competitiveness of the team over the weekend."
On the Mound
The Flyers got another solid performance out of a starting pitcher, this time from
Dylan Keller. The sophomore picked up the win behind 6.2 innings of work, allowing just one run on six hits, striking out six.
Jared Howell and
R.J. Wagner each threw hitless innings helping shut down the Seahawks in the later innings.
Scoring Plays
Top 5: (1-0 Flyers)
Michael Cleary started the offense in the fifth with a one-out double to right field.
Mariano Ricciardi followed that up with a single to center field, putting the Flyers on the board.
Top 6: (8-0 Flyers)
Alex Brickman opened up the inning with a walk.
Jared Howell singled moving Brickman to second.
Marcos Pujols reached on a fielder's choice with the Seahawks taking the out at second. It would be the last out they would record for a while as the next five Dayton hitters walked, with
Tate Hagan, Cleary, Ricciardi, and
Benjamin Blackwell each doing so with the bases loaded, putting the Flyers up 5-0. After a UNCW pitching change,
Riley Tirotta singled to center field driving home Cleary and Ricciardi. Brickman finished off a seven-run sixth inning with a sacrifice fly, scoring Blackwell from third.
Bottom 6: (8-1 Flyers)
One of the few mistakes Keller made on the afternoon came in the bottom half of the sixth when Cole Weiss put on just over the right field fence, putting the Seahawks on the board.
Bottom 8: (8-2 Flyers)
Tyler Jones gave up a double down the left field line to open the bottom of the eighth. After walking the next UNCW hitter,
R.J. Wagner relieved Jones and forced a groundout. Both runners advanced on the fielder's choice before Jac Croom flew out to center, scoring the runner from third.
Top 9: (9-2 Flyers)
Brickman led off the inning with a walk, and after
Eddie Pursinger replaced him as a pinch runner,
Jared Howell doubled to right center, scoring Pursinger and capping off the scoring for the afternoon.
