MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Dayton baseball team dropped a rain-shortened game 9-2 to Memphis on Sunday. The game was called after seven innings after steady showers throughout the game rendered the field unplayable.
It ended an 0-3 trip to Memphis, putting the overall record for the Flyers at 3-4.
Coach's Corner
"We were outplayed today in all facets of the game," head coach
Jayson King said. "Not the way we wanted the series to go and for us to play. We will make the necessary adjustments and be ready for our next opportunity."
On the Mound
Cole Pletka started the game for the Flyers, going 2.2 innings for Dayton. The senior allowed seven runs on five hits, striking out two and walking three.
Anthony Hattrup relieved Pletka in the third and gave up two runs on three hits in his Dayton debut in 1.1 innings on the mound.
The Flyers held the Tigers scoreless over the next three innings behind
Jake Silverstein and
Corey Imbriano. Both made their first appearances of the season with Silverstein striking out three over two one-hit innings and Imbriano sending two Tigers back to the dugout in his one inning of hitless work.
Scoring Plays
Bottom 2: (4-0 Tigers)
Memphis opened the inning with a single and a steal. A groundout to
Mariano Ricciardi advanced the runner to third before a wild pitch brought him in to score. A walk and a single for the Tigers were followed by a three-run home run to left center field, giving Memphis a 4-0 lead early.
Top 3: (4-1 Tigers)
Jay Curtis opened the inning reaching on an error and advancing to second on a wild throw. A
Michael Cleary groundout advanced him to third before
Mariano Ricciardi made Memphis pay for the mistake with a single to left, scoring Curtis and cutting the lead to three.
Bottom 3: (7-1 Tigers)
Pletka retired the first two Memphis hitters before allowing a double, hit by pitch, and walk to end his day on the mound. He was replaced by
Anthony Hattrup who allowed the next hitter to bloop a double down the right field line, scoring three and extending the deficit for Dayton.
Top 4: (7-2 Tigers)
Marcos Pujols stepped up with two outs and clobbered a 2-2 pitch over the center field wall to cut the lead to 7-2. It was the first home run of the season for Pujols and the third the Flyers have hit on the season.
Bottom 4: (9-2 Tigers)
Hattrup allowed a leadoff double which was followed by a two-run home run for Memphis, the final scoring of the game as the Flyer bullpen would shut the Tigers down the rest of the way.
