DAYTON – The University of Dayton baseball team finished its home opener with two wins on Saturday over Northern Kentucky.
The Flyers improve to 5-7 with the two victories, the first of which was a continuation from Friday's suspended game. That game was called due to darkness and picked up play in the bottom of the fourth inning.
GAME ONE: Dayton 4, Northern Kentucky 3
On the Mound
Hunter Wolfe opened the game for the Flyers on Friday, going all four innings played yesterday. The senior dominated with 11 of the 12 outs he recorded coming via the strikeout. Wolfe's final line featured just three hits and a run allowed.
Dylan Keller picked up where we left off on Saturday, going one inning and allowing an earned run on one hit and a walk. Kyle Lacalameto entered in the sixth, pitching a scoreless frame and allowing just one hit.
Tyler Jones entered in the seventh and went two innings holding down the fort for the Flyers allowing just one run and striking out two.
Bryce Hellgeth picked up the save, finishing a scoreless ninth and securing the win for Dayton.
Scoring Plays
Bottom 2: (2-0 Flyers)
Alex Brickman opened the day with a single down the left field line. He advanced to second on a
Jared Howell walk and both runners advanced when a pitch got lodged in the catcher's chest protector.
Marcos Pujols walked to load the bases and
Tate Hagan put the Flyers on the board with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Jay Curtis followed that up with an RBI single and Dayton went up 2-0.
Top 3: (2-1 Flyers)
The Norse got on the board when three straight singles scored a run.
Hunter Wolfe was able to get out of the jam, striking out the next two hitters for Northern Kentucky.
Bottom 4: (3-1 Flyers)
When play resumed Saturday
Jay Curtis sparked a two-out rally with a single to right field. A well-executed hit and run by
Michael Cleary got Curtis around the bases thanks to a fielding error by Northern Kentucky's right fielder.
Top 6: (3-2 Flyers)
The Norse led off the inning with a hit by pitch and the runner advanced to third on a wild pickoff attempt. A double to left center field scored the runner from first and the Flyers lead was cut to one.
Bottom 6: (4-2 Flyers)
Alex Brickman led off the inning with a double to right field and advanced to third on a ground out to second. After a walk by
Marcos Pujols,
Jay Curtis again came through with a double, scoring Brickman and extending the Flyers lead to two.
Top 9: (4-3 Flyers)
After a leadoff walk and a single got two runners on, a wild pitch advanced the runners one base and a second wild pitch brought in a run.
Bryce Hellgeth shut the door, picking up the save by getting a ground out to second to end the game.
GAME TWO: Dayton 13, Northern Kentucky 4
The Flyers jumped all over Northern Kentucky in game two of the day with a 13-4 victory.
Alex Brickman went 3-3 with two home runs and seven runs batted in on the contest.
On the Mound
Ben Olson started the game strong, picking up a career-high nine strikeouts as a flyer over six innings of three-hit baseball. He allowed just one run to score.
Nate Espelin entered in the seventh and recorded his first career strikeout as a Flyer, going one inning and giving up three runs.
Anthony Hattrup and
Jake Silverstein each pitched one scoreless frame each, with Silverstein picking up two strikeouts in his work on the mound.
Scoring Plays
Bottom 1: (1-0 Flyers)
Mariano Ricciardi led off the game with a single and advanced to second when
Riley Tirotta was hit by a pitch.
Alex Brickman followed with a single to left field, scoring Ricciardi and putting the Flyers on the board.
Bottom 2: (2-0 Flyers)
Tate Hagan hit his second home run of the season to right field to lead off the second inning, extending the lead for Dayton.
Bottom 3: (3-0 Flyers)
Brickman led off the third getting hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Hagan came up again and drove him in with a double to left center field.
Top 4: (3-1 Flyers)
The Norse led off with a double before a single by Griffin Doersching drove in the run.
Ben Olson was able to get a strikeout and a double play to limit Northern Kentucky to one run.
Bottom 4: (8-1 Flyers)
Michael Cleary walked to open the inning.
Mariano Ricciardi followed reaching on an error by the second baseman with Cleary getting to third on the play.
Benjamin Blackwell walked to load the bases and
Riley Tirotta unloaded a triple over the center fielder's head driving in all three runs to make it 6-1.
Alex Brickman followed him by unleashing a towering home run to left field to make it a seven-run lead for Dayton.
Bottom 5: (12-1 Flyers)
Michael Cleary again led off with a single before advancing to second on a hit by Ricciardi. Blackwell walked to load the bases and with one out
Alex Brickman hit his second home run of the game, a grand slam to make it a 12-1 lead while setting a new career-high for runs batted in in a game at Dayton.
Bottom 6: (13-1 Flyers)
Hagan walked to lead off the sixth and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Two batters later Blackwell singled to right field scoring Hagan and giving the Flyers a 13
th and final run of the contest.
Top 7: (13-4 Flyers)
Nate Espelin entered and struck out the first two hitters he faced, with the second reaching first due to a wild pitch for a dropped third strike. He walked the next hitter before allowing a three-run home run to end the scoring for the day.

Dayton will look for the series sweep against Northern Kentucky tomorrow at 1 p.m.
