DAYTON – University of Dayton women's basketball coach
Shauna Green has announced that Ténin Magassa, a 6-foot-5 frontcourt player in the French national program, has signed with the Flyers.
"I am absolutely thrilled to have Ténin join our Flyer family," Green said. "She brings great experience and also an imposing presence at 6-5. She is someone who can defend, rebound, and score with her back to the basket. We cannot wait to have Ténin here on campus!"
Magassa was the third-leading scorer for France's team that won the bronze medal in the U18 European championships last summer in Sarajevo. On a balanced team that had no player average more than 9.7 points a game in the tournament, Magassa's numbers were 8.9 points and 5.4 rebounds, and she was second on the team in FG% (.615, 24-39).
In the third-place win over Russia, she had a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Her stats in Sarajevo were a step forward compared to those from France's bronze-winning effort at the 2017 U16 European championships in Udine, Italy, where she averaged 5.7 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
Magassa lives in Morsang-sur-Orge, a suburb of Paris. She attended Jean Moulin High School in Vincennes, another Parisian suburb. She played four seasons of varsity basketball in high school.
She joins four fall signees as UD's 2020-21 freshman class. They are:
• Bailee Adkins - Guard – 5-7 – St. Joseph Central High School – Lavalette, W. Va.
• Capria Brown – Guard – 5-9 – Schlarman Academy – Danville, Ill.
• Makira Cook – Guard – 5-6 – Mount Notre Dame High School – Cincinnati, Ohio
• Anna LeMaster – Guard – 5-9 – Stone Bridge High School – Ashburn, Va.
In addition, a trio of redshirt freshmen will make their Flyer debuts in 2020-21:
•
Destiny Bohanon -- Guard – 5-10 – Wayne High School -- Huber Heights, Ohio
•
Maliya Perry - Guard/Forward – 6-0 -- Pickerington Central High School -- Columbus, Ohio
•
Nadjy Tyler - Forward – 6-3 -- Imhotep Charter School -- Philadelphia, Pa.
Dayton won both the regular season and tournament titles in the Atlantic 10 and finished the season 25-8 overall and 15-1 in the A-10. The Flyers earned nine votes in the final USA Today Coaches Poll and were just four spots away from the Top 25.
UD returns seven letterwinners from that team, including four of the team's top six scorers.
Erin Whalen was Second Team All-Atlantic 10 after averaging 12.2 points a game.
