Women's Tennis Dominates IUPUI 7-0 On Friday Afternoon

Sarah DeMarco And Natalie Stanton Pick Up First Wins As Flyers

MIAMISBURG, Ohio – The University of Dayton women's tennis team won for the first time in 2021, dominating IUPUI on Friday afternoon at South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg.

The Flyers took every match, winning 7-0 over the Jaguars and improving to 1-3 on the season. Freshman Sarah DeMarco picked up her first collegiate victories in both singles and doubles play, while junior Natalie Stanton also won for the first time in a Flyer uniform in doubles play.

"I was really happy with today's performance against IUPUI," head coach Erica Echko said. "We started off with a lot of energy and executed our game plan.  After winning the doubles point, we got off to early leads in singles and were able to keep it rolling.  It was great to see Sarah Demarco and Natalie Stanton get their first wins at Dayton."

UD opened the day with a strong performance in the doubles point, taking all three matches in the process. Stanton and sophomore Erica Wojcikiewicz began by taking the No. 2 doubles set against Diya Matta and Samantha Hayward of IUPUI 6-1. DeMarco and senior Kelly Pleiman clinched the point with another 6-1 victory for Dayton and sophomores Paige Kompa and Elizabeth Hamilton finished off the doubles sweep with a 7-6 victory in No. 1 doubles, giving the Flyers a 1-0 advantage in the match.

Hamilton brought that momentum into singles play, finishing off Sarah Lounsbury of the Jaguars 6-3, 6-1 in No. 3 singles. Kompa also won in straight sets in No. 1 singles to make it 3-0 Flyers. Pleiman clinched the match victory for UD with a two-set victory in No. 4 singles.

Wojcikiewicz improved to 3-1 on the season in singles play with a three-set victory in No. 2 singles over IUPUI's Krystal Grubb. DeMarco took the No. 5 singles flight in two sets as well to make it 6-0 Flyers and junior Claire Ghidotti finished the complete sweep of the Jaguars, staying undefeated in singles play in 2021, topping Ines Rivera 6-3, 6-0.

The Flyers will look to cap off the weekend with another victory on Saturday as they travel to Miami (Ohio) for a 4 p.m. matchup with the RedHawks.
