AKRON – The University of Dayton men's soccer team opened up the 2021 spring preseason with a 2-1 victory at the University of Akron Friday afternoon.
First half goals from sophomore
Toluwalase Oladeinbo and junior
Jake Feiner powered the Flyers to the first win in over 15 months off due to COVID-19. Senior
Jonas Fjeldberg provided the assists on both goals.
In the second half, the defensive battle took over with neither team able to make a dent in the score, but it was enough for the Flyers. Freshman goalkeeper
Marc Kouadio recorded five saves in his debut.
"It was exciting to finally get back on the field after a 15 month layoff," said head coach
Dennis Currier. "It has been a long journey just to get to this point. The team competed well against one of the best possession-oriented teams in Division I. There is a lot to improve on, but we competed very well throughout the game. Offensively, we were extremely dangerous on our counter attacks which resulted in both goals and a few near misses to put the game out of reach. We have so many weapons. Defensively, we held shape quite well and showed resilience when under pressure."
Dayton will open the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 20 at Baujan Field against Bowling Green.
