Men's Tennis Edges Marquette 4-3 In Close Battle Sunday

Connor Bruce Clinched The 4-3 Victory For The Flyers

MIAMISBURG, Ohio – The University of Dayton men's tennis team edged out a victory over Marquette 4-3 at South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg on Sunday.

"So incredibly proud of my guys," head coach Ryan Meyer said. "We didn't play doubles to our standards but came out with great energy and effort in singles. Everyone contributed to today's win but the game ball goes to Connor Bruce who came up huge to win 7-5 in the third set."

Sophomore Connor Bruce's victory in No. 1 singles clinched the victory for the Flyers, who move to 2-4 on the season.

Dayton opened the match down a point after dropping two of the doubles frames. Bruce and sophomore Max DeCurtins fell in No. 1 doubles 6-3 and Marquette took the lead after redshirt senior Steven Karl and junior Joe DeMarco lost in No. 3 doubles.

The Flyers stormed back in singles play, starting with sophomore Georgi Mavrodiev taking No. 5 singles in straight sets to even the score at one. Matt DeMarco followed almost immediately also taking No. 4 singles contest to put Dayton ahead. Freshman Erik Eliasson followed that up with his first career collegiate victory in No. 3 singles, giving UD a 3-1 lead.

Marquette responded taking the next two points with sophomore Oliver Dunne dropping in No. 6 singles and Karl falling in the second singles flight.

It came down to Bruce on the first court, who took the first set before dropping in a tiebreak in set two. The sophomore was down 5-4 before taking the next three points to clinch the victory for Dayton.

The Flyers will stay at home, with the next contest coming Sunday, Feb. 21 at 9 a.m. at South Regency.
