Women's Tennis Shuts Out Bellarmine On Friday Afternoon

Flyers Win Second Straight Match

MIAMISBURG, Ohio – The University of Dayton women's tennis team swept Bellarmine on Friday with a 7-0 victory at South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg.

"I was happy with our effort from top to bottom today," head coach Erica Echko said. "It was great to see Julia get her first win!"
 
The Flyers improve to 3-5 on the season and win their second-straight contest in the process. UD dropped just one set over the entirety of the match and swept an opponent for the second time this season. In the team's three wins, Dayton has won with dominance, taking 19 of 21 possible points.
 
Today was no different as the afternoon started out with the Flyers taking all three doubles sets for the first point of the match. Sophomores Paige Kompa and Elizabeth Hamilton held down No. 1 doubles 7-5, while junior Natalie Stanton and sophomore Erica Wojcikiewicz knocked off Bellarmine's No. 2 doubles pair 6-4. Freshmen Sarah DeMarco and Julia Bays completed the doubles sweep taking No. 3 doubles 6-3.
 
UD carried the momentum into singles play as Kompa took the No. 1 singles victory in straight sets over Aubrey Smith of the Knights. Wojcikiewicz won 6-2, 6-2 in No. 2 singles, improving to 6-2 overall in singles play this season. Hamilton shut out Morgan Whitlock in the first set before taking the second set as well in No. 3 singles.
 
DeMarco also played well in No. 4 singles, defeating Madison Devillez of Bellarmine 6-3, 6-2. Stanton fell in the first set before taking the second set 6-4 and finishing off with a narrow tiebreak victory 12-10 to take No. 5 singles. Bays collected her first career collegiate singles victory, taking down Channing Varnum in No. 6 singles 6-4, 6-2.
 
The Flyers will hit the road tomorrow travelling to take on Northern Kentucky with a 4:30 p.m. scheduled start time to finish out the weekend.
