DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will travel to Davidson to face the Wildcats in Atlantic 10 action Sunday, Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. at Belk Arena.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton is now 12-2 on the season after having its 11-game winning streak snapped last outing against Saint Louis. The Flyers are still atop the Atlantic 10 standings with a 11-1 mark and are looking to clinch their sixth regular season championship.
Head coach
Shauna Green is in her fifth season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year last season, her second time at UD. She is just one win away from career win No. 100 at Dayton.
As a team, the Flyers are averaging 66.3 points per game and holding opponents to 55.0 points each outing. Dayton is shooting 41.7 percent overall, 35.1 percent from three point range, and 69.3 percent from the free throw line. The Flyers are one of the top rebounding teams in the country with a +11.7 margin.
Dayton is led by redshirt senior
Erin Whalen with 13.9 points and 5.0 rebounds per game while fellow senior
Jenna Giacone is adding 12.5 points each contest.
SCOUTING DAVIDSON
Davidson hosts Dayton in the regular season finale with an 8-12 record overall and a 5-9 A-10 mark. The Wildcats are coming off a double-digit loss to Saint Louis on Friday, but are 5-2 at home this year.
Head coach Gayle Fulks is in her fourth season at Davidson, and fourth season as a collegiate head coach.
This year, the Wildcats are scoring 62.6 points per game and giving up 66.5 points to opposing squads. Davidson is shooting 38.4 percent from the field, 29.4 percent from behind the arc, and 68.4 percent from the charity stripe. The Wildcats are committing fewer turnovers, but are being outrebounded by opponents.
Leading Davidson is Chloe Welch with 16.2 points per game and shooting 45 percent from the floor. Suzi-Rose Deegan is chipping in 10.7 points and 5.4 rebounds each contest as well.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton suffered its first conference loss of the season against Saint Louis at home Saturday, 57-64. The Flyers stormed back from down double-digits to take a late lead, but were unable to hold on down the stretch.
Davidson faced Saint Louis on Friday and fell 45-57 to the Billikens. The Wildcats were outscored in every quarter despite only committing five turnovers in the game. Katie Turner led the way with 14 points and three three pointers.
THE SERIES
Dayton and Davidson have played eight times previously with the Flyers winning all eight times. In the meetin on Jan. 14 this season, Dayton was victorious at home 64-58. The Flyers got 19 points each from Whalen and Magassa in that contest.
STATISTICAL RANKINGS
This season the Flyers rank ninth in the nation in rebound margin and 12th in field goal percentage defense and 16th in scoring defense. Individually,
Tenin Magassa is 18th overall in the country in blocked shots per game while
Araion Bradshaw is 25th in assist to turnover ratio.
SHORTENED NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
The Flyers only had two non-conference games and no exhibition contests due to COVID concerns. Dayton opened the season at Morehead State on Nov. 25Â with a victory before dropping the home opener to Akron on Dec. 6.
BRADSHAW HELPS START ATHLETES DRIVING CHANGE
Redshirt senior
Araion Bradshaw was one of a few Atlantic 10 women's basketball players to start Athletes Driving Change, a minority female, student-run organization dedicated to racial and social injustice on campuses in the A-10. Their mission is to create change through education, action, and service. Bradshaw also serves on the A-10 Commission on Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.
THREE POINTS OF EXCELLENCE
Dayton has hit at least one three-point shot in 615 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 2, 2001, the longest streak in the Atlantic 10 Conference and one of the top streaks in the nation. The Flyers made a program-record 15 three-point field goals against Buffalo in the Connecticut World Vision Classic on Nov. 25, 2011. Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.
OFF TO A HOT START
Dayton has found much success under Coach Green in the month of January, going 34-2 in her first five seasons as head coach of the Flyers. That includes going undefeated in four of her five seasons.
