Women's Basketball Faces UNI To Open WNIT Friday

Tip-off Is At 12 p.m. ET In Rockford, Ill.

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will compete in its 14th straight postseason with a berth in the WNIT, taking on Northern Iowa in the first round Friday, March 19 at 12 p.m. ET. The game will take place at the UW Health Sports Factory in Rockford, Ill.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton finished the regular season with a 13-2 record and earned the top seed after going 12-1 in A-10 play. The Flyers are 14-3 overall going into the WNIT and are 9-1 away from home this season.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her fifth season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year last season, her second time at UD. She recently earned her 100th career win at Dayton in the regular season finale.

As a team, the Flyers are averaging 66.8 points overall and holding opponents to just 56.6 points each outing. Dayton is shooting 41.7 percent from the field, 33.2 percent from three point range, and 68.2 percent from the free throw line. UD is one of the best rebounding teams in the country with a +11.9 margin.

Dayton is led by First Team All-Conference performer and Most Improved Player Jenna Giacone, is leads the team with 13.3 points per game. Fellow senior and Second Team performer Erin Whalen is chipping in 13.2 points each outing while A-10 Sixth Woman of the Year Tenin Magassa is adding 9.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game.

SCOUTING NORTHERN IOWA
Northern Iowa enters the postseason with a 14-12 record on the season and went 11-7 in the MVC during the regular season. The Panthers had a four-game winning streak to end the season, but fell to Bradley in the opening round of the conference tournament.

Head coach Tanya Warren is in her 14th season at UNI and has been named MVC Coach of the Year three times.

This year, the Panthers are scoring 70.6 points each contest and giving up 66.1 points to opposing squads. UNI is shooting 41.2 percent from the floor, 32.9 percent from behind the arc, and 75.4 percent from the charity stripe.

Leading UNI is Karli Rucker with 13.8 points and 3.4 assists per game. Kam Finley and Megan Maahs are chipping in 8.4 points each as well.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton suffered a heartbreaking 56-50 loss to VCU in the Atlantic 10 Semifinal matchup on March 13, after entering the tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Flyers had a poor shooting night, shooting 35.8 percent and were outrebounded in the effort.

Northern Iowa fell in a close one to Bradley in the opening round of the MBC Tournament on March 12, 62-59. The Panthers scored just seven points in the second quarter and were never able to topple Bradley, ending their MVC bid. Megan Maahs had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

THE SERIES
Dayton and Northern Iowa are meeting for the first time in series history.

IN THE WNIT
Dayton is making its sixth appearance in the WNIT, going 1-6 previously. The Flyers last competed in the tournament in 2019, falling on the road at Northwestern in the first round.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
This season the Flyers rank seventh nationally in rebound margin and 13th in rebounds per game. Dayton is also 19th in field goal percentage defense. Individually, Tenin Magassa is 21st in the country in blocks per game while Araion Bradshaw is 16th in assist to turnover ratio.

FLYERS DOMINATE A-10 MAJOR HONORS
The Atlantic 10 Conference released its end-of-the-season awards the week prior to the tournament and recgonized three Flyers with major awards. Redshirt senior Jenna Giacone was named Most Improved Player as well as First Team All-Conference. Fellow senior Araion Bradshaw took home Defensive Player of the Year accolades as well as Third Team and All-Defensive team. Freshman center Tenin Magassa was named Sixth Woman of the Year and named to the All-Rookie Team. On top of that, redshirt senior Erin Whalen was named to the Second Team and All-Academic team, totaling nine awards for the Flyers.

GREEN EARNS 100TH WIN AT DAYTON
With a 72-66 win over Davidson in the regular season finale, head coach Shauna Green earned her 100th victory at Dayton, the fastest to reach that mark in program history.

FLYERS CLINCH SIXTH A-10 TITLE
After going 12-1 in the regular season, the Flyers clinched their sixth overall regular season league title and second straight. It was also the fourth in five years under head coach Shauna Green.

Since the 2009-10 season, Dayton is 174-21 (.895) when scoring 70 or more points, including 11-1 in 2016-17. During the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Flyers only lost one game per season when scoring at least 70 points, and dropped only two games in 2019-20 when reaching that mark.
