Late Heroics Push Women's Soccer Past Norse

Flyers Secure Overtime Victory in Home Opener

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's soccer team opened the home portion of their schedule Thursday night as they welcomed the Northern Kentucky Norse to a rain-soaked Baujan Field. In a tightly-contested, defensive match under the lights, the Flyers came out on top 2-1 in overtime.

Dayton's victory Thursday night marks their third consecutive victory to open the 2021 season, and brings their record to 2-0 all-time against Northern Kentucky.

KEY MOMENT
In her second game back from injury, sophomore forward Itala Gemelli scored an absolute gem of a goal in the 82nd minute to tie the match at 1-1 after an early 38th minute goal from Kayla Wypasek of NKU. Gemelli took the ball in the upper far corner of the box, got it on her right foot, and curled in a bender from the 18-yard box into the upper right corner of the net, bringing Baujan Field into an uproar. After hanging on to the offensive momentum for the remainder of regulation, the match would make it's way to overtime, the Flyers' first overtime action of the season. After a hand ball on NKU's Lydia Self in the Dayton penalty area, Lexy Kidd stepped up to the spot with the crowd on their feet, and put the penalty into the left side of the netting to give the Flyers a 2-1 win in the golden goal format.
