Women's Tennis Shuts Out Wittenberg On Sunday Afternoon

Flyers Take Every Set In Singles Play Against The Tigers

DAYTON – The University of Dayton women's tennis team opened the fall season with a 7-0 victory over Wittenberg at Five Seasons Family Sports Club on Sunday afternoon.

The Flyers now sport a 1-0 record this season, while Wittenberg falls to 0-1.

"I was happy to get the win against a strong Wittenberg," head coach Erica Echko said. "I was proud of our consistency in singles. The freshmen showed very few nerves as they took care of business in both doubles and singles. Erica (Wojcikiewicz) fought hard from being down 4-1 in the second set to take the match in straight sets as well."

Dayton did not drop a set in singles play and took two out of three doubles points, keeping control of the match for a majority of the afternoon.

Freshmen Laura Greb and Neena Katauskas pushed the Flyers out in front with a 6-0 victory in the second doubles flight, while fellow freshman Jordan Mitchell paired with junior Erica Wojcikiewicz to take the win in No. 3 doubles 6-1 as well to give UD the doubles point.

Mitchell followed that up with a win in No. 6 singles, knocking off Wittenberg's Sidney Purks 6-2, 6-0 to make it 2-0 in favor of Dayton.

Junior Paige Kompa also won in straight sets on Court Five, defeating Claire Stechow 6-1, 6-0 to extend Dayton's lead to three. Fellow junior Elizabeth Hamilton clinched the victory for UD, making it 4-0 by winning the third singles flight, taking down Meera Virk 6-1, 6-0.

Greb got the win on Court Four 6-4, 6-1 over PJ Meyers, and Katauskas made it a perfect day for the Dayton freshmen with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Ashley Isaac in the top singles flight.

Wojcikiewicz gave the Flyers a seventh and final point, capping off the team's shutout with a  6-3, 6-4 win in No. 2 singles over Caroline Sproule.

UD will return next Sunday to take on Thomas More in the team's lone home match of the fall. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at Graul Tennis Complex.
