DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will return home for its second nationally televised game in the last week hosting Fordham University Sunday, Jan. 23 at noon on ESPNU.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton sits atop the Atlantic 10 standings at 4-0 on the year and 13-3 overall. UD is 6-1 at home this season and currently riding a seven-game winning streak dating back to Dec. 20.
Head coach
Shauna Green is in her sixth season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year 2020, her second time at UD. She earned her 100th win at Dayton in the regular season finale last year.
As a team this year, Dayton is scoring 68.9 points per game and holding opponents to 57.9 points each outing. The Flyers are shooting 41.1 percent overall, 37.9 percent from three point range, and 66.1 percent from the free throw line. UD benefits from +6.3 rebounding and +1.5 turnover margins.
Dayton is led by graduate student
Erin Whalen with 16.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game while sophomore
Makira Cook is chipping in 15.7 points and grad student
Jenna Giacone is adding 12.2 points each outing.
SCOUTING FORDHAM
Fordham comes to Dayton with a 12-4 record on the season and 3-1 A-10 mark. The Rams have found success on the road as well as at home, going 3-1 in away games. Fordham has won three in a row and nine of the last 10 games.
Head coach Stephanie Gaitley is in her 36th season as a head coach and 11th at Fordham with almost 700 wins under her belt.
This season, the Rams are averaging 64.9 points each contest and allowing just 59.3 points to opposing squads. Fordham is shooting 41.1 percent from the field, 31.4 percent from behind the arc, and 76.7 percent from the charity stripe. The Rams have positive rebounding and turnover margins as well.
Fordham is led by the A-10's leading scorer in Anna DeWolfe with 20.2 points per game and a 35.2 three-point percentage. Asiah Dingle is contributing 14.0 points while Kendall Heremaia is adding 11.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.
LAST TIME OUT
Dayton traveled to UMass Wednesday and earned a hard-fought 69-60 victory over the Minutewomen.
Erin Whalen had a game-high 21 points while
Tenin Magassa had 17 points and nine boards.
Fordham defeated George Washington midweek 61-53 before a short turnaround to face Davidson on the road Friday night.
THE SERIES
Dayton and Fordham have met 33 times previously with the Flyers controlling the series 25 wins to the Rams' eight victories. Fordham has won two of the last three meetings however, including last season's contest on Feb. 22, 50-38 in the Bronx. UD had won the prior meeting last year 48-44 at home.
STATISTICAL RANKINGS
Dayton ranks 11th nationally in three point field goal percentage and 25th in turnovers per game. Individually,
Araion Bradshaw ranks 11th in the country in assist to turnover ratio while
Erin Whalen is 18th in three pointers per game.
OFF TO A HOT START
Dayton has found much success under Coach Green in the month of January, going 39-2 in her six seasons as head coach of the Flyers. That includes going undefeated in four of her first five seasons.
70'S THE MAGIC NUMBER
Since the 2009-10 season, Dayton is 181-22 (.891) when scoring 70 or more points, including 11-1 in 2016-17. During the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Flyers only lost one game per season when scoring at least 70 points, and dropped only two games in 2019-20 when reaching that mark.
