DAYTON - The University of Dayton men's soccer team will finish up the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 12 p.m. at Massachusetts in Atlantic 10 action.
SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton looks to wrap-up the regular season with its 10th victory over the season, sitting at 9-1-4 overall and 3-1-3 in A-10 play. The Flyers need a win to clinch a hosting spot in the A-10 Championship tournament next weekend.
Head coach
Dennis Currier is in his 18th season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the 2020 season.
As a team, the Flyers are averaging 2.57 goals per game and holding opponents to 0.86 goals each outing. Dayton is out-shooting opposing squads 22.1 to 8.0 and at a higher percentage.
UD is led by seniors
Forster Ajago, with six goals and three assists, and
Andy Sanchez, with five goals and three assists as well. Sophomore
Michael Adedokun and freshman
Joseph Melto Quiah are tied for the team lead with five assists on the year. Junior goalkeeper
Dario Caetano has six shutouts in 12 starts this year.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
MASSACHUSETTS
Dayton travels to UMass facing their 6-3-7 record for the season but 1-1-5 in the A-10. The Minutemen are hoping to end their 2 game losing streak after close losses to Davidson and Clemson. Their home record stands at 3-0-4 and with this being their first game back at home since
the losses they are eager to win.
Seasoned collegiate soccer coach, head coach Fran O'Leary is leading his sixth season at UMass.
His career coaching record stands at 282-181-59 with 19 winning seasons in his 28 years as a
college coach.
The Minutemen average at 1.19 goals per game though only give up 1.75 goals to their opponents.
UMass comes close to their opponent's averages per game with a .756 save percentage they have
struggled to become ranked this season.
Although, leading goal scorer for the Minutemen Alec Hughes has earned UMass 9 goals and 2
assists this season with a .56 goal scoring percentage. Hoping to hold out the Flyers, goalkeeper Matt Zambetti has 54 saves this season and maintains a .771 save percentage.
LAST OUTING
Dayton suffered its first loss of the season last Saturday at home to Saint Louis, 3-1. The Billikens took the initial lead in the 39th minute and doubled their advantage in the first minute of the second half and never looked back.
UMass took on defending national champions Clemson Monday and left with a 3-1 defeat of their own despite leading at halftime, 1-0. Alec Hughes struck in the 35th minute, but three second-half goals gave the Tigers the victory.
SERIES HISTORY
Dayton and UMass have played 25 times previously with the Flyers holding a 14-9 win advantage. UD won last year's meeting 4-2 at home and have won three in a row.
ATTACK MINDED
The Flyers are one of the most dangerous offenses in the country as they lead the nation shots per game and shots on goal per game. Dayton also ranks Top 10Â in scoring offense , goal differential, and total goals.
FLYERS RECEIVING VOTES IN USC POLL
In the latest United Soccer Coaches national rankings, Dayton dropped to the receiving votes second after being ranked 19th last week. The Flyers achieved their highest ranking ever this season at No. 16, and it's the fourth season in which they have been in the Top 25 (19th in 2013, 21st in 2009, 22nd in 2008). UD has been in the Top 25 or receiving votes all nine weeks of the regular season.
