Flyers Win Five Of Six Singles Matches In Victory

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The University of Dayton men's tennis team won on the road at Cleveland State 5-2, taking five of six singles matches in the win. Senior Steven Karl picked up his 60th career singles win, becoming just the tenth Flyer in program history to reach that mark.

The Flyers improve to 6-4 on the season, while Cleveland State falls to 0-7 in 2022. Dayton opened by dropping the doubles point in No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, falling behind 1-0 early in the match.

Dayton then turned it on during singles play, winning five matches, with three coming in straight sets. Sophomore Ronit Hiryur won his team-leading 11th match for UD in No. 2 singles, winning 6-4, 7-6 against Kade Mindry.

Freshman Eric Perkowski made it 2-1 Dayton in No. 5 singles, taking down Clark Bilinovich in straight sets as well by a score 6-3, 6-2. Perkowski is up to nine singles victories this season, which is the third-most on the team.

Senior Will Harper made it 3-1 Flyers in the fourth singles flight. Harper won in straight sets against Raul Teichmann, taking the match 6-3, 6-3 for his fifth win of 2022.

Junior Connor Bruce clinched it in the top singles flight, beating Maxime Mareschal-Hay on Court One in a three-setter. Bruce moved into a tie for 24th in program history with his 33rd career win. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native now has 33 wins in his career, tying Michael Rohana and now Harper on the career wins list.

Karl finished the match with a three-set win of his own over Hugo Chatras, taking the first set 6-4 before dropping the next set 7-6 and forcing a deciding third frame. Karl took the win 10-5 with the match already decided.

Dayton will remain on the road, heading to Toledo on Sunday, Feb. 27. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. at UT Varsity Courts in Toledo.
