DAYTON - The University of Dayton softball team is heading to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to take part in the Hilltopper Spring Fling. Dayton is scheduled to play a total of five games against Illinois State, Ohio and host Western Kentucky Feb. 25-27 at WKU Softball Complex.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
Illinois State (1-8) is coming off a 1-4 weekend at the Littlewood Classic hosted by No. 23 Arizona State, picking up a 6-2 win over Portland State Feb. 20. The Redbirds are led by current MVC Newcomer of the Week Abby Knight who turned in a 4-for-8 weekend at the plate with two home runs and six RBI last week.
Ohio (1-4) opened its 2022 season at Lamar's Cardinal Classic Feb. 18-20. The Bobcats' offense is paced by Allie Englant with a .421 average, eight hits and five stolen bases.
Western Kentucky (8-1) won all five of its games last weekend in the team's home-opening Hilltopper Classic. The Tops' Taylor Davis carries the team's best average (.542) on 13 hits while Bailey Curry has knocked in 14 RBI on her 10 hits.
ABOUT DAYTON
Dayton (1-4) opened the 2022 season Feb. 11-13 in Texas with games at Sam Houston's Bearkat Classic and the Houston Invitational. The Flyers' offense is led by freshman
Emma Schutter with a .286 average and has been perfect on the base paths, going 3-for-3 in stolen bases. Sophomore
Kara Gunter knocked out the team's first home run of the season, which also happened to be a grand slam, against No. 25 Wichita State on Feb. 11 and carries the team's best slugging percentage of .429. In the circle,
Kelsey Gumm (0-2) has worked a team-high 12.1 innings including a complete game against Houston Baptist with one earned run and six strikeouts to open the season.
