EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Dayton baseball team won both games of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon, taking the series at Evansville in the process. The Flyers won the first game 4-2 before taking the second contest 5-4.

The Flyers used timely hitting in both contests to clinch the series and sweep the doubleheader. Junior
Alex Neff drove in four runs between the two games, highlighted by a two-run home run in the second game of the day.
Dayton takes the series and sits at 5-1 this season. With the two losses, Evansville falls to 1-6.

GAME ONE
ON THE MOUND
Junior
Ryan Steinhauer started the first game on the mound for the Flyers, pitching five innings. The southpaw struck out five and allowed just one unearned run on two hits in his time on the mound. Steinhauer gave way to senior
Bryce Hellgeth in the sixth, who would pitch the next 1.1 innings for Dayton. Hellgeth allowed one run on two hits and picked up a strikeout.

Sophomore
Eli Majick got the next out for the Flyers before graduate student
Andrew Zapka entered in the seventh. Zapka allowed just one hit and struck out four in his 2.1 innings, picking up the win and finishing the game for the Flyers.

SCORING PLAYS
Top 4: (2-0 Flyers)
The first three innings went without a run, but junior
Ben Jones opened the fourth inning with a base hit. Junior
Keagan Calero picked up a single as well and both advanced into scoring position on the throw. Senior
Marcos Pujols brought Jones home with a ground out to the shortstop, breaking the scoreless tie and giving Dayton the team's first lead of the series. Graduate student
Henry Strmecki doubled to right center, bringing home Calero and Dayton went up 2-0.

Bottom 4: (2-1 Flyers)
Steinhauer allowed a one-out double and allowed the baserunner to get to third on a wild throw on a pickoff. A base hit up the middle would cut the Dayton lead to one in the fourth.

Bottom 7: (2-2 Tie)
Evansville led off the seventh inning with a walk and a balk advanced the runner into scoring position. A base hit to right field scored the tying run and made it a 2-2 game.

Top 9: (4-2 Flyers)
Pujols led off the ninth with a base hit up the middle. Sophomore
Anthony Steinhardt entered as a pinch runner and two batters later a single by graduate student
Alexis Castillo put a runner in scoring position. A base hit by senior
Jay Curtis brought home the go-ahead run and a sacrifice fly by Neff extended the late lead to two. Zapka would pitch a scoreless bottom of the ninth to even the series.

GAME TWO
ON THE MOUND
Sophomore
Parker Bard opened the game for the Flyers, getting the first out, allowing two runs on one hit in his first start of the season. Junior
Anthony Hattrup entered for Bard, limiting the damage in the first inning and going the next four innings without allowing a run. Hattrup picked up his first win of the season, allowing just two hits and striking out six pitching quality innings for Dayton in the second game on Sunday.

Nick Maue got the next out for the Flyers, picking up a strikeout in one-third of an inning on the mound. Sophomore
Austin Brush was next out of the Dayton bullpen, allowing one unearned run and did not allow a hit in 2.2 innings on the mound, striking out three.

Majick entered for the Flyers to face the next batter and senior
Jake Silverstein would pick up his first career save, closing the game and pitching the final 1.2 innings on the mound. Silverstein allowed just one unearned run on one hit while striking out three and securing the series win for Dayton.

SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 1: (2-0 Purple Aces)
Evansville opened the game with a hit by pitch. Two batters later the Purple Aces would draw a walk and another hit by pitch to load the bases. A single to left field scored two runs and gave Evansville the early lead. Hattrup entered for Bard and shut down Evansville limiting it to a two-run inning.

Top 2: (2-1 Purple Aces)
Castillo picked up a one-out single and advanced to second on a base hit by Curtis. A double by Neff brought home the first run of the game for the Flyers and cut the lead to one.

Top 4: (3-2 Flyers)
Curtis picked up another single, this time with two outs in the fourth inning to set up Neff for his first home run in a Dayton uniform, giving the Flyers the lead for the first time in the contest.

Top 5: (4-2 Flyers)
Junior
Omar Daniels drew a leadoff walk and proceeded to steal second and third base, scoring on a sacrifice bunt by Calero, extending Dayton's lead to 4-2.

Top 7: (5-2 Flyers)
Daniels led off the frame with another walk, battling back from an 0-2 count and advanced to second on a hit by pitch to Jones. Calero again bunted Daniels over to third and after Pujols was intentionally walked, a bases-loaded walk to Strmecki gave the Flyers a three-run lead.

Bottom 8: (5-3 Flyers)
An error by Castillo put the first runner of the inning on. A fielder's choice was followed by a walk, putting a runner in scoring position. The runner advanced to third on a fly out to right field and scored on an error by Calero, cutting the lead to two.

Bottom 9: (5-4 Flyers)
Silverstein struck out the first batter of the inning, but he reached on a dropped third strike. A groundout to Calero advanced the runner to second and a base hit to center scored the run. Silverstein would shut the Purple Aces down, giving the Flyers the win and clinching the series.

UP NEXT
The Flyers will head to Eastern Kentucky for a midweek contest on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Turkey Hughes Field at Earle Combs Stadium in Richmond, Ky.
