Women's Basketball Opens NCAA First Four Wednesday

The Flyers and Blue Demons Tip-Off At 9 p.m. ET

DAYTON - The University of Dayton women's basketball team will take on DePaul University on Wednesday, March 16 in the First Four of the 2022 NCAA Tournament. It marks the 15th straight postseason for the Flyers and 10th NCAA appearance.

SCOUTING THE FLYERS
Dayton heads to the tournament with a 25-5 record overall and earned an at-large bid after winning the Atlantic 10 regular season title with a 14-1 league mark. The Flyers are coming of a loss to UMass in the conference title game, but is 5-2 in neutral site games this year.

Head coach Shauna Green is in her sixth season in charge of the Flyers and was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year this season, her third time at UD. She ranks second all-time in program history in career wins.

As a team this year, Dayton is averaging 65.5 points per game and holding opponents to 54.7 points each outing. The Flyers are shooting 40.0 percent overall, 33.8 percent from three point range, and 67.8 percent from the free throw line. UD also benefits from a +6.6 rebounding margin.

Dayton is led by sophomore and A-10 Most Improved Player Makira Cook with 14.6 points per game while graduate students Erin Whalen and Jenna Giacone are chipping in 13.3 points and 12.4 points per game respectively.

SCOUTING DEPAUL
DePaul faces Dayton with a 22-10 record on the year and 14-6 mark in the Big East where the Blue Demons finished fourth in the conference. DePaulis 2-2 on the year in neutral site games and fell to Marquette in the opening round of the Big East tournament last outing.

Head coach Doug Bruno is in his 36th year at his alma mater.

As a team, DePaul is scoring 88.3 points per outing while allowing just 78.3 points to opposing squads. The Demons are shooting 45.2 percent from the field, 34.5 percent from behind the arc, and 76.3 percent from the charity stripe.

Freshman phenom and All-America candidate Aneesah Morrow leads the way with 21.7 points and 13.8 rebounds per game. Sonya Morris has been just as productive with 17.9 points per game while Deja Church is adding 14.2 points each outing.

LAST TIME OUT
Dayton fell to UMass in the A-10 Championship game 62-56 on March 6 in Wilmington, Del. The Flyers trailed early and were unable to mount a comeback despite cutting the margin to four in the fourth quarter. UD was led by Makira Cook with 18 points in the contest.

DAYTON IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
Dayton holds an overall record of 5-8 in the NCAA Tournament over nine appearances. The Flyers last competed in the Division I tournament in 2018 where they fell to No. 8 seed Marquette 84-65. UD earned a berth in 2020 before the tournament was cancelled.

STATISTICAL RANKINGS
Dayton ranks 10th in the nation in field goal percentage defense and 16th in scoring defense.  The Flyers are also 19th in the country in turnovers per game and 20th in rebounds per game. Individually, Araion Bradshaw ranks 22nd in Division I in assist to turnover ratio while Tenin Magassa is 35th in blocks.

GREEN, COOK HONORED WITH A-10 AWARDS
Dayton head coach Shauna Green was named Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the third time this season while sophomore guard Makira Cook was named A-10 Most Improved Player, joining teammate Jenna Giacone who earned the accolade last season.

Cook picked up Second Team All-Conference honors while Giacone was named First Team All-Conference. Graduate student Erin Whalen earned Third Team All-Conference. Senior Kyla Whitehead and grad student Araion Bradshaw received All-Defensive Team accolades while Bradshaw joined Whalen on the All-Academic Team.

FLYERS WIN 2022 A-10 REGULAR SEASON TITLE
Dayton won the regular season finale at home against Rhode Island on Feb. 26, clinching the Atlantic 10 title for the fifth time in the past six seasons, including three straight championships. With that victory, graduate student Jenna Giacone and head coach Shauna Green have won their seventh trophy in their time at UD.

COOK NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Dayton sophomore Makira Cook received All-Tournament team honors at the 2022 Atlantic 10 Championships after leading the Flyers to the title game with 13.7 points per game over the three-game stretch.

WHALEN EARNS ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS FOR SECOND STRAIGHT YEAR
Graduate student Erin Whalen was named CoSIDA Academic All-District for the second straight season for District 5. Finishing up her master's degree in communications, she has a GPA of 3.88.

THREE POINTS OF EXCELLENCE
Dayton has hit at least one three-point shot in 651 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 2, 2001, the longest streak in the Atlantic 10 Conference and one of the top streaks in the nation. The Flyers made a program-record 15 three-point field goals against Buffalo in the Connecticut World Vision Classic on Nov. 25, 2011. Dayton tied the record with 15 vs. Wright State on Nov. 28, 2012.

Since the 2009-10 season, Dayton is 184-22 (.891) when scoring 70 or more points, including 11-1 in 2016-17. During the 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, the Flyers only lost one game per season when scoring at least 70 points, and dropped only two games in 2019-20 when reaching that mark.
