Baseball Drops Close Contest In Series Opener At Michigan

Flyers Fall 2-1 On Thursday Night

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Dayton baseball team lost a pitcher's duel in the series opener at Michigan 2-1. Junior Ryan Steinhauer pitched six strong innings and the Dayton bullpen combined for two scoreless innings to keep the Flyers in the game.

Junior Alex Neff drove in Dayton's lone run on a base hit up the middle in the seventh inning. It was one of just three hits for UD's offense against the Wolverines. The Flyers struck out 13 times and did not draw a walk against Michigan.

The Flyers fall to 8-7 on the season, while Michigan improves to 9-8 in 2022.

ON THE MOUND
Steinhauer started the game for Dayton, scattering three hits in his six innings on the mound. The lefty allowed just one earned run and did not allow a run after the third inning. Redshirt junior Cody Whitten opened the seventh inning, facing two batters and getting the first out of the inning.

Graduate student Nick Meyer finished the seventh for Dayton, retiring both batters he faced and picking up a strikeout to move the game into the eighth inning. Graduate student Andrew Zapka pitched a scoreless eighth for the Flyers, allowing one hit and striking out two Wolverines.

SCORING PLAYS
Bottom 2: (1-0 Wolverines)
Michigan opened the inning with a base hit to left field. A ground out to junior Omar Daniels advanced the runner to second and an error by Daniels moved the runner to third. Back-to-back walks brought home the game's first run, but Steinhauer retired the next two batters to limit the damage.

Bottom 3: (2-0 Wolverines)
Steinhauer gave up a double to open the third inning. A walk and a stolen base put runners on the corners and a sacrifice fly to junior Jose Martinez in center field brought home the second run of the game.

Top 7: (2-1 Wolverines)
Senior Jay Curtis doubled down the right-field line before Neff came up and brought in Dayton's lone run on a 1-1 count. It cut the lead to one, but the Flyers were unable to score in the final two innings, finalizing the score at 2-1.
