Baseball Wins In Extra Innings At Tulane

Ben Jones Draws A Go-Ahead Bases-Loaded Walk In The Eleventh

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Dayton baseball team won 7-3 in 11 innings on Saturday afternoon at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium in New Orleans. Junior Ben Jones drew a go-ahead bases loaded walk to give the Flyers the lead and senior Marcos Pujols hit a three-RBI single off the wall to secure the win for Dayton.
 
The Flyers improve to 2-0 in extra-inning games this season and 9-10 overall, while Tulane falls to 15-8-1.
 
Dayton had a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but a three-run inning by the Green Wave forced extra innings before the Flyers put up four runs in the eleventh to secure the win.
 
Pujols ended up finishing 4-for-6 with three RBIs on the afternoon, while Jones and senior Jay Curtis each drove in a pair of runs. Redshirt freshman Andrew Casey reached base three times in the contest, scoring the go-ahead run for UD.
 
ON THE MOUND
Redshirt freshman Chris Peguero got the ball to start the game for Dayton and kept Tulane off the board for the first five innings of the game. Peguero shut out the Green Wave, allowing no runs on six hits and struck out two in his third start of the season.
 
Senior Bryce Hellgeth relieved Peguero to start the sixth inning, going the next two innings, striking out two and allowing just one hit, again keeping Tulane scoreless. Graduate student Andrew Zapka entered in the eighth inning, going the next 2.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, picking up three strikeouts.
 
Sophomore Eli Majick got the second out in the tenth, giving up two hits before giving way to graduate student Nick Meyer. Meyer went the final 1.1 innings, picking up his first win of the season, striking out four to secure the victory for UD.
 
 
SCORING PLAYS
Top 1: (1-0 Flyers)
Juniors Ben Jones and Keagan Calero led off the game with back-to-back walks and two batters later senior Jay Curtis picked up an RBI single to give the Flyers an early 1-0 lead.
 
Top 3: (2-0 Flyers)
Jones singled to lead off the third and two batters later senior Marcos Pujols moved him to third with a single of his own. Curtis drove in his second run of the contest with an RBI groundout to extend the lead to two.
 
Top 7: (3-0 Flyers)
Redshirt freshman Nick Lukac reached on a dropped third strike with one out and advanced to second on a base hit by senior Jake Silverstein. Jones drove in his ninth RBI of the season on a single to left field to make it a three-run lead for Dayton.
 
Bottom 9: (3-3 Tie)
Zapka gave up a leadoff double to lead off the ninth before getting a strikeout for the first out of the inning. A single and a two-run home run tied the game at three and sent it to extra innings.
 
Top 11: (7-3 Flyers)
Redshirt freshman Andrew Casey led off with a base hit to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Mason Dobie drew a walk to put two on and Lukac put down a bunt single to load the bases. Two batters later Jones drew the go-ahead walk to put the Flyers up one run, and Pujols cleared the bases with a single off the wall to put the Flyers up by four. Meyer shut down Tulane in the tenth to give Dayton the win.

The Flyers will return on Sunday to decide the series at 1 p.m., Eastern time.
