PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The University of Dayton men's tennis team took down St. Bonaventure 6-1 on Saturday at Alpha Tennis & Fitness of Pittsburgh. The Flyers won their conference opener and seniors
Steven Karl and
Will Harper set the program record for the most wins by a class in program history, winning for the 66
th time in their Dayton careers, passing Jordan Benjamin and Lorenzo Rollhauser for the most all-time.
The Flyers improve to 11-6 and 1-0 in conference play. St. Bonaventure falls to 5-8, and 0-2 against A-10 opponents.
Dayton opened the match with a win in doubles play. Harper and junior
Connor Bruce got the win in No. 1 doubles 6-0 over Stijn Paardekooper and Marco Rivolo. Karl and junior
Matt DeMarco gave UD a 1-0 lead in No. 2 doubles over William Schneideman and Luke Riemann 6-2.
The Flyers continued that momentum into singles play, dropping just one of six singles matches against the Bonnies. Sophomore
Ronit Hiryur won his team-leading 15
th match in No. 2 doubles against Marco Rivolo 6-1, 6-2. Harper put Dayton up 3-0 with a win over Norka Sanchez 6-1, 6-3 before St. Bonaventure took the top singles flight.
DeMarco clinched the match for the Flyers in No. 4 singles against William Schneideman 6-3, 6-1. Freshman
Eric Perkowski won his 10
th dual singles match and 13
th overall in No. 5 singles over Luke Riemann 6-2, 6-3, with senior
Steven Karl closing the match with his 63
rd career singles victory, one behind Benjamin and Brad Nykiel for eighth in program history.
The Flyers will return to finish the weekend with a 1 p.m. match against Duquesne at Alpha Tennis & Fitness of Pittsburgh.
